Re: 4004cii Strings

greetings all. I have a 4004Cii on order (it's been on order since last year!) and I am hopefully optimistic that Rickenbacker Corp will deign to build a batch of 4004Cii's later this year.
I am already thinking about strings...
I have a couple of fretless basses, and they all are strung with my ...

4003S-----Ampeg B15

I have a 60's vintage Ampeg B15N head that drives a VintageBlue B12 cabinet
I am wondering how that 4003S will sound thru said Ampeg

Re: 4003FL and its 'upright' tone

Here's a clip of me on my 4003FL/Brite Flats just wankin' away to the tune of "So What", it's awfully sloppy but here you go (click the "Pseudo-upright" song):

I wouldn't say it's truly upright like, but it shares some qualities of the ...

Re: Incredible tone!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong please....
I believe that

A Chris Brubeck Plays only a modified Ric 4003fretless with labella black nylon tapewounds...don't have a clue about effects or amplification
B Chris Brubeck's primary instrument is Trombone...not bass
C Chris Brubeck is also a composer and ...

Re: Incredible tone!!!!

I'm trying to develop that sound on my electric. I also play around on Classical guitar, but I lack the funds, the time, and the desire to get into the world of upright bass..although I will say this...nothing, to my ears, even comes close to the sound of Ray Brown, or Ron Carter, or NHOP, or ...

Incredible tone!!!!

I've been listening to the Brubeck Brothers album "Classified" and on the song "Heyoke" at about 3:00 Chris takes a solo on his highly modified Ric Fretless.
Unb elieveable. It's absolutely the MOST uprightish sound I've yet heard from any electric bass player, regardless of what bass is being ...

Re: crazy question re 4004

Have any of you tried the LaBella Tapewounds on a Ric? Particularly on a fretless? I think that Chris Brubeck uses tapes of some sort on his highly modified fretless ric, but I am not sure about that.
Anyway, I love the labellas. there is something about the feel of them that is incredibly pleasing ...

Re: crazy question re 4004

I had my 4004Cii converted to fretless a few years back. My luthier actually cut the narrow white plastic strips used to fill the fret slots on the same radius as the fretboard so they would never pull up. After they were glued in place, he brushed a clear thin epoxy over the fretboard till it ...

crazy question re 4004

Hi all, my first post here.
I am pretty much totally a fretless player. I have 2 fretless basses, a turner 5 and a custom 4. I have been wanting a Ric for quite some time, and after playing a 4004 Cii a few months back I have settled on the 4004 as my choice. However since it's not available as a ...
