Re: rickenbacker 4001 fretless
You'll need to other (first) two characters or the serial number from the other end of the jack plate. Then you can go to Rickenbacker.com and use the serial number decoder to find the month and year it was built. That's a start...

Re: '74 4001 Ferrule Creep
Which tuners does your '74 have?
I'm gonna guess that it's the nickle-plated, open-geared reverse tuners. And I'm gonna guess that you have the small metal ferrules.
My solution would be:
Carefully wrap masking tape around part of ferrule that fits into headstock. Use razor blade to trim tape ...

'74 4001 Ferrule Creep
The ferrules on the tuners of my '74 4001 "creep" out over time. I'm thinking I could just carefully glue them in with a little titebond (real titebond).

Re: I bought a 74 4001
cool! I have very early 74, it doesn't have the red dots but it had the 1/2" spacing and the neck profile is really flat. I love the sound of the bridge hi-gain, but I prefer the more articulate bass of the toaster for the neck. Concerning those huge flats, mine too had large strings when I got it ...

Re: I bought a 74 4001
Jim, the 70s higains have a special and very satisfying sound. I would play it as is for a while and see what you think before trying the toaster. That will give you a chance to hear the difference, if any. Also be aware there is a .0047uF cap in the bridge pup circuit that if you short it out with ...

Yup I really thought I needed that toaster. Maybe someday.

I had thought so. I never really questioned it - but I did take it all apart and a look to make sure everything looked "real".

Re: I bought a 74 4001
What month? Does it have Red Dot position markers? Next time you have the pickguard off, see if its factory routed for a 1/2" neck pickup spacing. My NC 4001 has red dots and was routed for 1/2" (though I bought it with a 1" spacing guard and high gain- had pickguardian make a 1/2" guard and bought ...
