Looks like Rickenbacker produced the first 481 in almost 30 years and listed it on eBay. Check out the Ric outlet auction. I am grinning ear to ear. Yes it is a hybrid but Wow.

I'm with you Ken, you can almost play a 650 acoustically it rings out so well.ken_j wrote:A Rick 650 with its neck-through constrution and hardtail bridge has more sustain than their other models IMO.

I am onboard for the ride as well Paul. We have a "62" reissue strat we use, after changing out the pickups to fit more of a John Frusciante sound. I may be way off base but my guess is it will look good but, will not have those straty tones you want. So maybe lacking in the character dept. Very ...

I think a good product might be, Medi-Sol adhesive remover wipes. We use them for iv patch cleaning. They do not have harsh solvents or dyes, but you might want to try on a small section first. Below is a link for some info. Hope it works out.

Here is a sample of our 481 it is a 77 model year, the humbuckers are quite hot. My son was rockin it, soooo I grabbed the camera. Hope this helps. If I get some time we will try to up load more samples with high gain.
