Re: Speaking of Reverb

Heads up, CJ: Musician's Friend has the Holier Grail on close-out for $149 (while supplies last), and will toss in a pedalboard bag to boot.

Re: Cleaning and polishing: step-by-step pictorial

Thanks, Gil! I'm finding this a very interesting project. At first I thought it would be as much a chore as anything, but it's turned out to be very satisfying to get to know my instrument in this way. By the time I get done, I suspect I'll feel like I had almost as much a hand in its construction a...

Re: Fragile: Tony Kaye's presence?

The Yes Album tour didn't come to Atlanta, so I didn't see them until the Fragile tour (with ELP -- a great night for prog-rock fans). They must have dropped the song by then, what with another album's worth of original material to draw on. Still, set lists from 1970 consistently include "Ameri...

Re: Fragile: Tony Kaye's presence?

Until I read this topic, it had never occurred to me that America wasn't all Wakeman. But now I've listened to it several times, and while I think he's playing, I suspect what he's playing is a synthesis (har) of parts written by himself and Kaye.To me, the giveaway is the opening organ riff. Despit...

Re: Cleaning and polishing: step-by-step pictorial

I apologize for the unintended break. Life intruded. John, I think I will fix the lift -- in for a penny, etc. Thanks for doing the legwork for me! Let's strip this baby down. First thing off is the strap: http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af78/dscantland/Polishing%20a%20Rickenbacker%20bass/4001_st...

I would never have thought it was a good idea, but Paul seems to know what he's doing.

Re: Cleaning and polishing: step-by-step pictorial

What is the Windex for? According to Paul (emphasis mine): Best time to clean the fretboards is during string changes, when the old strings have been removed. Cut a cotton diaper into four squarish pieces and dampen one with either naphtha or my old fave Dr. Stringfellow's Lem-Oil. Scrub near the f...

Re: Cleaning and polishing: step-by-step pictorial

I'm agnostic on CB. I appreciate its vintage value, I'm a hug fan of the craft required to do it properly, and I think it looks good on FG and great on JG. But I prefer the plain on MapleGlo. I'm sort of glad that's the way the luck of the draw played out for me. Now, Dave, here's a question for you...

Re: Cleaning and polishing: step-by-step pictorial

Depends on your definition of "mid," I guess. Here's the evidence (bad photo, but autofocus isn't what it used to be  ): http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af78/dscantland/Polishing%20a%20Rickenbacker%20bass/4001_jack-plate.jpg Run the decoder, if you like. I make it out to be July o...

Cleaning and polishing: step-by-step pictorial

Here's our subject, a mid-1973 mapleglo 4001: http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af78/dscantland/Polishing%20a%20Rickenbacker%20bass/4001_full.jpg I pity all you folks waiting on backorders these days; I purchased this beauty new about three months after its manufacture -- just walked into the store...

Re: 1973 4001 Pickup Cover options/variations?

My 1973 had chromed plastic (since lost, along with approximately 342 odd socks). But from what I can tell, '73 was an odd year for some details.

Re: Playing bass and singing

My son plays drums and sings lead..try that on  In my first band (TC and the Comets, circa 1965), I sang and played drums -- I wasn't very good, which might be why we did mostly instrumental covers. It's extremely challenging. I'm a great admirer of drumming lead singers like Don Henley, Phi...
