Here is a shot of the MPC (modules) circa '80 for those of us who also saw the Drama tour. Note the Mutron and Brassmaster on the rack. The Marshall, Conn ST-11 tuner, etc.

Re: Optima flatwounds 4440
After opening a new set of flats (I can't speak for every brand) such as TI's,(tonally, the best balanced flat's I have used) Pyramids, GHS, etc, you'll find the polishing compound residue remains. Paper towel and naphtha (check lighter fluid label contents) should be used to wipe the strings clean ...

Re: Optima flatwounds 4440
Those seeking some player information may wish to contact Luke (loveboatcaptain) in Britain for information. He was flight testing those (the band is RenattaJane) around the end of January for Optima. When he received them he sent me a picture (different packaging) of about 7 or 8 sets. Included bot...

Re: Which flatwounds for new 4003s?
My favorite, and seemingly more balanced string to string flat is the TI JF344 set. Brighter than most flats too. Total tension about 140 lbs.

Re: Dane Wilder's VVT mod for 4004
There is also the Bill Lawrence trick, which by placing an additional capacitor between the poles of a blend pot, a tone choke is created. Some folks like this too. Perhaps, Dane has experimented with this too. Dane has built 3 harnesses for me, including the restorative harness in the '64. PJWiring...

Nice! ....somewhat reminds of the 'Teenage Head' record cover by The Flamin' Groovies.

Re: Dane Wilder's VVT mod for 4004
Since your talking VVT, has anyone considered Volume, Blend Pot, Tone. My Fano PX-4 has this configuration.
The blend pot allows the player's preferred balance between neck & bridge pickup levels to be exactly maintained, independent of volume adjustments. Just a thought.

Re: Reproduction Pre-1974 Aluminum Tailpiece / Bridge
For some reason, I couldn't open those links without having to create a Yahoo acct. I'll simply guess you have replaced them with flatheads. This what I have done on the '64. Actually, mine are factory screw's with the crown of the screw ground more flat, leaving the same area of purchase securing t...

As John Fay suggested, the ability to lower the action to a greater degree would be helpful. Moreover, the sand cast bridge sometimes sits on the 3 tailpiece screw heads that may raise it ever so slightly impeding the ability for it to rest fully on the floor of the tailpiece.

Re: !970's Case Candy
Hopefully, I have my timeline together in my brain... Indeed, the piece of paper 'manual' depicting neck adjustment etc.(its on the net as a photo) and a light blue colored warranty/registration card. This was printed on a heavier card stock with a perforated 'tear off' for the warranty portion, as ...

Re: Make my 4003 Meaner
The pots used when your bass was made speced out at around 180K, which choked off the high end clarity and definition in the tone. I build wiring harnesses for Rick guitars and basses blueprinted to 60's/70's specs using 500K tone and 250K volume pots in matched pairs. I can also incorporate the vi...

Re: NAMM Rumors
Being from the far side of the pond, I have absolutely no inside information on this, but my personal expectations re NAMM 2016 are: 1. Following the release of the 1993 Plus at NAMM last year, the Rickenbacker Corporation is unlikely to release any substantive new models this year, though there mi...
