I still have it, and restrung it about 15 years ago with Roto 66 SS rounds. Neck is perfect, it sounds really nice and plays very well. It's in the registry, OJ7200.
Meant to put a pic of it up.

Re: Refinish

I don't know of any refinishers in the Philly area....but something to consider, do you have a back up finish color in mind? I say this because there is a possibility that your particular bass was finished in Midnight Blue because the wood used in the body might not have looked good in Mapleglo or F...

Re: Your first Rick tales

My friends of course had heard about RIC basses, and knew that Paul McCartney used one, Geddy of course, but lesser known users such as Maurice Gibb (ahh, the Holy Grail...) etc. I decided I wanted one and would blow what was 3 paychecks at the time. Went to the local music store and asked if they h...

Re: What kind of bass amp do you use with your Rickenbacker?

I just use a run of the mill setup- an Ampeg B100R for most practice and recording, and when I need to drown out the too loud guitar players, an Ampeg SVT-350H with a 1x18 cab. I have found that the Sansamp Bass Driver is a terrific pedal expecially for direct injection into the board with the XLR o...

Re: Please educate me what I need to look for in a 1977 4001

I would check the height of the strings off of the fretboard to start (action height). If excessive, which I would call perhaps 1/4-3/8 or an inch (someone help me with metric conversion, haha) that neck adjustment would be needed by someone who knows about Rickenbacker 4001's. If done incorrectly, ...

Re: The Book is alive!

I'm thinking , the latest production ser# one whic has the black plexi. I've been told the cut off was ~mid '75. Mine's October 75 so I would way it might be one of the later ones?

That book IS astounding, by the way. I recognized many basses in it (not necessarily famous players) :)

Re: The Book is alive!

Well now that you mention it, the 67WB, lol

No, Wints' boat paddle. I have an affinity for White 4001's. Mine is in the registry, though its not exactly like Wints' but still a whitey! OJ 7200. :)

How rare is the black plexi TRC on a '75 4001?

Re: The Book is alive!

I know the feeling Bert, I still miss my old DH163 but I can look at her in the book. Mind you, thats my CS bass that Chris Squire is holding in the book so its one down but one still standing. I like how the "Holy Grail" made it into the book- nice work on the whole project! Just got my c...

I'm not joking. The bridge shouldn't have as great an effect as the other aspects I mentioned. It's not like these bridges are the trapese styles as found on other guitars.

Re: (We now join this RM 1999 restoration already in progres

Perhaps I am wrong, but isnt the tone much more in the neck construction, string,s and more importantly technique, not the piece of metal which sits behind the saddles and does not resonate?

Re: Banning of Rickenbacker on basschat uk

I agree 100%. No one benefits from this behaviour on either side. Forums like Basschat and RRF have positive and negative attributes, the main positive is free discussion. When this is curtailed it is a sad day for the bass playing community. The irony is, I have owned 3 Rickenbacker basses, the rea...

Re: Any controversial years of bass manufacturing?

My 1975 4001 is absolutely fantastic and all original- terrific mids and highs (its in the register, OJ 72xx white)

My 1997 FG 4003 is what I would call "average". It doesnt speak to me. Sounds good, but little character.
