I had a '92 4001v63 I sold for $800 in '96 at a music shop in Hollywood and I remember the guy saying "why are you selling this??" (I needed the cash).
One of the worst decisions of my life.

Re: Youtube now allowing Beatles covers apparently
That Icon is horrible live, when just plugged straight into an amp. Thin-sounding and garbage. I think I cranked down the tone knob and put in compression to try to get something out of it with that video. Maybe the more expensive 500 model is better, but I'm gonna stick to my Rick.

Youtube now allowing Beatles covers apparently
I guess they changed their mind after years of immediately squashing any video with any hint of a Beatles tune.
But I just looked, and my 4001C64 bass covers to Something, You Never Give Me your Money, and Not Guilty from 10-12 years ago have been restored ( https://www.youtube.com/@Rickdd2/videos ...

Re: McCartney's last live performance with his Rick
And is this image also worth something, that he apparently concluded after all these years, the E string is the best place to put your thumb when playing fingerstyle on a Rickenbacker? Versus awkwardly on the corner of the fretboard ("I Am the Walrus" video)?

Re: McCartney's last live performance with his Rick
He has the pickup switch on bridge, but I think he's also using roundwounds. It's not his usual Rick tone.
IIRC, the general consensus is that the harness is a standard RH one, therefore, the masses believe the switch positions are "reversed", meaning, switch down is the neck pickup.
You're ...

Re: McCartney's last live performance with his Rick
Paul started writing with Elvis Costello in 87' and did some work on his album Flowers in the Dirt & EC's Spike!...
Paul played his 4001 in this "My Brave Face" session with Costello (15:15 timestamp): https://youtu.be/J0PmzS6AUWo?si=syenJMe5ITJNZ_4o&t=915

McCartney's last live performance with his Rick
From what I can find, it was this BBC 1 performance in 1987 of "Listen to what the Man Said"

Re: 4001c64 tail lift
I have the exact same tail lift amount in all these photos in my '09 C64 so I'm pretty sure this is the maximum amount it's going to lift, given the angles and forces from the strings. It's been 15 years for me now and it hasn't gone beyond that and hasn't affected intonation.

Re: Two 4000 basses up for auction from Randy Bachman
Sold! For $6,000 each.
I noticed these had separate glued-on necks like the 3000 series. The 60's model 4000's from what I can find were through-necks like the 4001.
Congrats to the new owners, anyway.

Two 4000 basses up for auction from Randy Bachman
Auction ends May 30, 2024.
'73 and '74 single-pickup 4000 models are rare enough, but these are also from Randy Bachman's collection and they're only estimating $2,000-4,000 price. Both descriptions say they were studio played on BTO's '75 album Four Wheel Drive.

McCartney playing his 4001 in late 80's
This is from the "My Brave Face" sessions. Part of it was in the official video but this is a little extended and is with sound. I hadn't seen it before or on here anyway. It looks like he's using neck pickup only and sounds like roundwound strings maybe?

At 4:40 you can see it's not a toaster pickup, and not reverse headstock, so maybe a modified V63 reissue?

Re: Get Back
I thought it was interesting when the control room asked him to switch basses and he brought up the Rickenbacker, then as George Martin was kneeling down to help adjust the tone on the bass, Paul admitted he didn't know what those knobs really did.

The capacitor might be dead (they can wear out over time).
