Re: New RIC bass copy

RIC copy basses rock !!! :D (Just kidding, no really. If one can't afford a Ric then get something else. In the late 60's I wanted a Rickenbacker but just didn't have the money. I bought a Shaftesbury Tele bass copy. It was a good bass and I played it till 1974 when I bought my fist Rick 4001. The S...

Re: Slade using a Rickenbacker bass on Top Of The Pops?

Back in 1976 the BBC wanted to do a radio show about the band that I was in. We had a load of good recordings that we offered the Beeb but they insisted that we played ‘live’ in the studio. We duly wheeled in all the gear (big stuff back then) and played about six numbers live, no overdubs allowed! ...

Hi Ross, that is a great bass and a great deal. 1K for a good 4003S is a steal.

Re: Hello everyone

Hi Ginger, good to see you back. I haven't been here for quite a while myself, and I'm finding it hard to get gigs as well. I've been playing electric upright in a modern folk band to keep me 'out there'. I think it may be a while yet before we get back to the good 'ol days. Just love that bass, and...

Re: Amber Fireglo 4003, too expensive?

Hi Alistair, I think that sort of money is way over the top. AFG have turned up in the UK, I've been very tempted myself. I would have thought that 1200 tops should do it. That's over 400 quid saved and that is a lot of money. Hang on in there especially if you already have a Monty. What part of the...

Re: In the Hands of Mr. Howe

At a tangent.... I sold Steve Howe a 6 string Gibson guitar banjo back in 1976. It was made in the 1930's. I always hoped he might use it on a recording but I never saw or heard it again. Mind you he did have one or two other instruments at that time. He was a vintage collector before most of us had...

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics

Listening again I think the V63 has it rather than the '78. It cuts through better and in the context of a band that really matters.

Philip, did you use the same type of strings on all the basses, if so what did you use, great tone on all of them!

Re: Direct recording of my two Rics

What a great thread...!

Of the Rics the 78 open was my fave.

Of the Jazz the neck at 75% was my fave, but I am a Jaco fan...!

Re: Call me a heretic, but...

When I bought my pride and joy first Rickenbacker 4001 JG back in 1974 I was rather pleased to see the new, simple , masculine binding on the bass rather than the slightly girly checkerbinding on the old basses. I even thought the new 4 pole highgains looked better than the toasters. Oh well.... And...

Re: I never thought this day would come!

Nice bass Jeff. As you haven't been shot down in flames I will 'come out' and say that my prefered bass for a little while has been a MM Stingray 4  . I used to take my Ric 4000 and my Fender P to a gig but got fed up switching in the set. I also thought I must look a bit of a nerd, I mean the...

Congratulations Vincent.... I'm glad no one else got hold of this one... I agree, except for me of course!!. :D I didn,t go for it because.... A: I didn't think it was the real deal B: I didn't have the money handy. Does this mean that CS will get the bass back or will it stay with Vincent now? Sta...

Re: Finally I replaced the strings on my '72 4001

My '73 wears TI Jazz Rounds - very low tension strings, 043-089. Took a bit getting used to the low tension, but it was worth it - I'm not stressing the neck, and the sound is to die for. I use these on my '72 4001 as well. I put them on for the sake of the neck but as Ilan says they take a bit of ...
