Anyone have a sound clip or video of one of these in action? Looks neat.

Re: thinking of first bass - is fretless an option?
One thing that is cool with fretless is setting up a neck with shellac and using round wounds. I've got a 2nd hand Jazz Bass with a fretless neck that was coated by HG Thor ( http://www.woodwiz.com/epoxy/ ) and it is nothing short of spectacular. It has a bright saw blade intonation to it that will ...

Re: 1976 4001 and a 1957 Combo 400
C/U of sweet diamond knobs. Seen these on other 50's Ricks... assume they are original. Although what is weird is they turn to a stop on the pot, and then with minimal pressure will continue spinning endlessly. I can't see a stop screw down in the hole so maybe they are missing. I can't lift the kno...

Grover Tuners. Are these original? Still work pretty damn good.

Re: 1976 4001 and a 1957 Combo 400
I have been studying yours Paul as there isn't much documentation out there on these 400's. I had read somewhere that there are roughly 500 in existence (here actually: http://www.daddys.com/blog/?p=2457 ). It of course looks phenomenal finished in Cloverfield... and to just happen to have a Kauffma...

Re: Only 4k
Ha ha, that's a fun comparison between the original and the ESP forgery. I like this line the best:
Look to the right of the pinky finger. What the Hell is that? It looks like someone glued a piece of raw chicken to the front of the guitar.

Re: 1976 4001 and a 1957 Combo 400
Finish is rough and was probably brushed on long ago. Odds are it had a brush refinish in the 60's as there is coverage of the neck through on the back and the "flocking" is long gone from the back... in fact the back is solid wood with no sign of any other material ever having been there....

Ah, I was wondering as some sample data is only from a few numbers sold. Sometimes only 1-2 units.
