Are the "ears" rattling in the shaft, or are the shafts (and ears) rattling within the rectangular housing?
I had a bad egg on a '72 where the ear was rattling in the shaft slot, but the tuner itself was functioning fine. My only solution there, having tried crimping of the shaft connection, was ...

Tuner replacement on my 4003?
Hey all,
I've got a 1984 4003, which is a transition model as far as I can tell. It's got mostly 4001 parts, but with a 4003 PG and truss rod placement (still old rods, too). It's also got the wavy Grover tuners, but it seems they're starting to go on me. The D tuner is sufficiently loose that it ...

Re: 4001 Truss Rod Help
Also, get a real Rick tailpiece/bridge for the bass!

Thanks for the welcome! Glad to be a part of the community here.
Although FWIW, I'm pretty sure that it is the standard Ric bridge/tailpiece that I've got there... As far as I can tell, the early '80s 4003s had ...

Gotcha; will do! Thanks for the tip
Am I looking at doing damage to the integrity of the neck-through design, or is it something else?

Re: 4001 Truss Rod Help
Guys, I need to seriously drop a big thank you to everyone who posted info on this thread. Similar to Greg, I have an '84 4003 that had a totally chewed up set of truss rods. Myself and my engineer neighbour were able to follow the info contained herein and bring my baby back to full playing ...
