Thanks Dale. What I meant by "flipping" was turning it over, long-ways, and then switching the wires so as to end up with a reverse wound pickup.

Reverse wound pickup

Hi,

I've got a question: If I flip over the bridge pickup on my 4003, will it affect the sound at all?

The idea is to cancel the hum, at least when both pickups are turned on.

I noticed my new 4003 (bought in 2003) hums a little
more than my brother's '84 4003 - I think it
has something to do with the new high-gain pickups
on mine rather than a grounding problem - it's usually not sooo bad. I suspect
that maybe my lead guitarist's amp may have had something to do with ...

If I'm not mistaken doesn't shielding only eliminate electro-STATIC noise? I.e. the the kind of noise that goes away when you touch the strings... I'm not having a problem with that.. the hum I'm getting seems to be electro-magnetic, i.e. due to the single coil pickups... which is why Jeff's ...

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm especially intrigued by the Jazz p/u in the mute idea. Will that work for a 4 string as well as a 5 ?

Minimizing hum on a 4003

Hi,
I realize a little hum comes with the territory when you've got single coils.. and I realize it's a small price to pay for such a great sound.. but that all said, could any of you give me some suggestions on what I can do to reduce the hum a little (both live and in the studio)? Is there ...

Thanks Bob. I adjusted the pickups yesterday but I think I'll do it
again with my amp's tones flat just to make sure.
Right now my neck p/u is about 1/8" from the G, and the E side is as high as it can go (and it just barely manages to get the same output as the G side).
The treble p/u is about 3 ...

That procedure should be applicable to a bass too, right? Though I'm assuming on a Ric bass it would be 1/8" instead of 1/16" ?

I should have written "pushed down", i.e. I turned the
screw clockwise to bring the saddle closer to the tailpiece.
I have a feeling though that when I restrung the bass I might have inadvertently
moved the bridge a little so that it's now crooked (I didn't know it
could be moved like that). I ...

Thanks. The neck is pretty straight now. I was not able
to completely eliminate the bow.. I probably could have, but
the truss rods suddenly became harder to turn and I didn't want to force.
But it's a very small bow, and maybe it will disappear in a few days anyway.
BTW, does anyone else have ...

Good question. I wasn't tightening the rods because of the TI's. I bought the bass last autumn and I haven't done any type of setup on it yet. Since I was changing the strings anyway I thought now would be a good time to adjust the neck and bridge (I noticed that the neck was a little more bowed ...

cool. Thanks guys. One more question: is it still a good
idea to loosen the truss rod first before tightening even
with the newer basses or is this completely unnecessary now?
