OK, I got a $5 1/4" nut driver from the hardware store and turned the treble side 1/4th of a turn and the bass side 1/8th of a turn and BINGO! Worked like a charm. Thanks again!
I do think its kind of crummy of Rickenbacker not to supply the tool with the bass but . . . cest la vie!

Make a pencil mark on the rods before you turn them so you'll have a reference from before you started. Give them each a 1/8 to 1/4 clockwise turn (same amount for each). Give it a day or so and see if it works. A 1/8 turn in either direction shouldn't really mess with your setup if you need to try ...

My new 4003 has the same dead spot for 3-4 frets on the D string as the OP. It seems to me that a $2000 instrument should be protected against these sorts of issues.
Have your tried different strings? Sometimes just a little tweak of each truss rod (no more than 1/8 to 1/4 turn) can help.
