Re: Which pre-amp/DI stomp box do you use with your Ric bass?

Broughton audio makes great filters, but you have the wrong one, you want a high pass filter which will allow all the highs through and roll off the ultra low end. https://www.broughtonaudio.com/product-page/high-pass-filter They are greatly regarded and not that expensive considering their boutique...

Ashly BP41 for classic setup, for high tech you can't beat an Avalon U5, sorry no stomps suggestions though.

Re: Setting Hi Gain pickup heights

Agreed if you want even volume, the height is the control.

And yes ears are the way, unless you want to use a meter.

Re: Shipping to Australia

Yeah sadly the shipping world has changed, and yes it's all about size.
They have gotten really restrictive with larger packages.

Good luck,

Re: Shipping to Australia

I sent a bass pre-pandemic to Australia, took the neck off and it was around $100 insured. These days I would expect a full neck through bass to be about $300 or so. USPS was the cheapest, try UPS, Fedex, and DHL. I don't think freight is the way to go anymore. You might look into a bicycle shipper....

Re: Body routing for vintage bridge

That looks like the standard route to me. It just needs to allow the mute to go down far enough to back off the strings.
Also notice the holes for the posts, it needs to be at least that deep.

Re: Lacquering a 4003 fretboard?

Sorry to say the claims that nitro breathes and poly doesn't, is complete superstition. Also consider what about painted bodies then? So by those theories for best tone, we all should be playing natural wood instruments, with no finish. Even an oil finish creates a protective layer, by that theory i...

If it bugs you now, I doubt that it will go away.
Super glue fix will be a lot cheaper than redoing the whole neck.
Or just learn to live with a unique bass that you could identify with your eyes closed. :)
Condolences, as the first ding is the toughest.

Re: Lacquering a 4003 fretboard?

It was my assumption that modern Ric's are using PolyEurethane for the body and fingerboard.

Re: Can a fretless be played without all the mwah/meow?

Sorry that's blasphemy, play another bass if you don't want the wonderful mwah. Frets or high action will surely disperse the effect, also old strings and flats. Actually why not engage your string mute? To me it's almost the same as folks not wanting any fret buzz on their Ric. My Zon bass does mwa...

Re: Sourcing pickups

Dane Wilder (ace on bass) makes great wiring setups. Also they can include the classic tone with a push pull pot. I guess it depends on what you're shooting for, his are pretty much similar to stock modern 4003. Or experiment if you're going for something else. I'm sure Dane can provide some insight...

How about here?

Bartolini and Seymour Duncan also make direct replacements.

I just checked Reverb and certainly no pickup deals on vintage stuff, wow.

Re: How do you point your knobs?

I point my knobs so I can read them from the players position.

My old '69 4001 came to me with all 4 knobs labelled Treble tone, always found that entertaining.

Re: What is this "flat neck" business for Ric basses?

Yeah you really need to start with level and crowned before any decent setup can happen. Especially when it comes to fine tuning the classic Ric tone. The lower you go the more problems will start showing themselves.
Continued success.

You might consider a more permanent solution to the mute issue. I'd use contact cement, coat both surfaces, let dry, press together and not worry about it for years. ;) Double stick is a temporary fix, Alien Tape might work.
