Re: Potentiometers and Bartolini pickups on 4001

Your pot measurements shows the variation from spec many pots suffer from. The volumes I would expect to be 250, and the tone to be 500. Usually the better the quality the closer to spec they will be. Depending on the shaft material you might be able to cut any extra off. You could also build up was...

Re: Ric 4001 fretboard separating from neck

It's really a matter of old glue and decades of pressure of the rods pushing against the back of the fingerboard. It's not always about poor rod adjustment causing the fingerboard detachment. Modern glues will be stronger than the wood itself. It is a lot of work, and always the risk of damage. But ...

Re: Ric 4001 fretboard separating from neck

That seems like a classic issue, not impossible to repair, but do it the proper way. Most times it happens over time when the truss rods perform their job too well. It happened to my '69 4001, so my condolences. The best way to repair it would be remove the fingerboard completely and reattach it. No...

Re: 4001S or modded 4000?

Funny to see folks with no clue or knowledge coming up with answers over there on TB. Looks like legit but modded 4000, notice the poor neck pup alignment, also pickguard cutout looks home done. Also not forstner routed pickup, which for that year would be unusual. And of course I could be wrong, al...

Re: 4003 harness question

That's very curious, chasing electronic problems can be a pain in the Bass!
Still sounds like an environmental issue if you've seen this happen in the same space before.

At least you can go back, perhaps that's the best test and solution.

Re: 4003 harness question

My guess is it's perhaps your amp and or environment, not necessarily the bass itself?

Re: 4003 harness question

Sound like you're in business.
The vintage/regular pull is a pretty cool option to have.

Of course the ultimate test is to get a stereo cable/split and send each pickup to different paths/destinations.

Re: Wiring Harnesses

We have a member here that makes great replacement harnesses. Push pull pot for classic tone is a great option to have, just like the modern age 4003 models.

Re: Strange bridge pickup problem

That all sounds very odd, and replacement would be the easiest option.
You might be able to find someone to rewind or repair the original?

Also pretty sure it's only 2 bolts holding the mounting bracket on the pickup, you can use the old pickup mounting bracket.

Good luck,

Re: Fretless Ric bass questions.

Yes indeed it's all about muscle memory, but if you had the ability before, you can get it back quite quickly.

Just like making it to Carnegie Hall, it takes practice, practice, practice. :)
Well unless you don't care about intonation?

Re: Is light fret buzz normal on a 4003?

To me that is the classic Ric tone with rounds. Especially with a flat adjusted neck.

Some folks would suggest flats, that wouldn't be me. :)

Re: What is this "flat neck" business for Ric basses?

Each bass is going to be different, also remember there are certainly other things at play. For instance the nut depth will change the geometry and certainly bridge height will as well. To me, I like the fret noise, to me that's the Ric tone and vibe. Set it up how you like since you're the one that...

Re: What is this "flat neck" business for Ric basses?

Trying to set the neck without string tension will take a lot more effort to get correct.

I always set mine to flat as possible with tension since they are the old style folded metal rods.

You might be able to get away with it on the more modern rods, but I bet it takes longer too.

Re: Which pre-amp/DI stomp box do you use with your Ric bass?

Broughton audio makes great filters, but you have the wrong one, you want a high pass filter which will allow all the highs through and roll off the ultra low end. https://www.broughtonaudio.com/product-page/high-pass-filter They are greatly regarded and not that expensive considering their boutique...
