1973 4001 nut
A few months ago I picked up a 4001 from early 1973. It appears to me that most of the bass is original, but the nut looks like it has been replaced. I'm going to have the bass restored and I'd like to confirm my suspicions about the nut before I have a new one made. Any opinions would be appreciate...

Re: Pickguard for recent 4003
When did they change it back? I just bought mine new a few weeks ago and I believe it has the aforementioned "bulbous" pickguard shape. It appears that the latest batch of 4003W basses are wearing the newly reshaped pickguard. For sale at Wildwood: http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/images/pr...

Re: Recent late model pickguard shape
Prior to ordering my custom pickguard for my 4003 I asked Tony at Pickguardian whether he could simply take a 4001 pickguard blank and drill holes in it to fit a 4003. He told me that a 4001 guard will not cover the holes on a 4003. So, unfortunately, even if the guard covers the control cavity it i...

Re: Recent late model pickguard shape
Out of curiosity, I looked through the register to see if I could figure out when the "potato" bulge first appeared on 4003 pickguards. It looks like it occurred around April 1997. The change coincides, not coincidentally it would seem, with a subtle change to the position of the control k...

Re: Recent late model pickguard shape
You can have a custom guard made in the shape of a 4001 guard (no bulge) but with holes drilled to fit a 4003. I had a guard like this made by Tony at Pickguardian. I had to send in a tracing to get this done. If you're interested I can send you a scan of my tracing. My guard was done in 60s style w...

I'm pretty sure it was me that bought your RISH pickup from ebay. Good luck with the restoration.

Re: Finished nut on 4001c64
Slots actually look slightly chewed up, at least on the E side. Or maybe that's just the clear coat coming off. Not sure. I actually have a replacement nut at home. I wouldn't dare replace the nut myself though. So, I need to think about the cost of having someone do the work (if it really does need...

Finished nut on 4001c64
Does anyone know whether Ric basses ever leave the factory with clear-coat covering the nut? I own a 2007 4003 and a 2009 4001c64s, neither of which have any sort of finish on the nut. I'm considering buying a 2009 4001c64 which has clear-coat on the nut that's starting to chip off. I'm not concerne...
