Re: Ric 330, Vox AC30, and TS808

My Les Paul and Ric 330 sound completely different if you run them through effects. Sure, effects can mask the non-modded sound of the guitar, but not completely, My original point is that I didn't realize the Ric fits with so many types of music, and there is a wide variety available to the player ...

Re: Tom Petty tribute band with a fake Ric.

Maybe the guy can afford a Ric but likes something about this particular knock off that he prefers to a Ric.You could hardly fault him if that's the case. I would never play a Ric copy, even if it were a great guitar because, I admit, I am loyal to the brand. I wouldn't buy a POS from Rickenbacker, ...

Paul's Playing, Ric vs Hofner

I've heard McCartney say many times that the light weight short scale Hofner allows him to play differently. I've been revisiting the London Town and Back to the Egg albums and then the stuff from the last 20 years. On Egypt Station, he plays some beautiful lines that discard the root note, dispensi...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

I have two vintage-y/vintage-ish instruments that I bought new, my 78 4001 and Martin HD-28VL. I like getting new instruments and wearing them in myself. The only "vintage" instrument I ever look for is a 1981 left handed Ibanez Artist. It was the one that got away years ago. So even then,...

Re: Mute Restored

Just had the mute restored. The plate was bent, and the foam was long ago eaten away on my 78 4001. Labella flats, plus the Ric's mute = vurry close to Pepper. (nowhere near salt) William ,a mute is always in season. For me "they've been going in and out of style but they're guaranteed to rais...

Re: 78 vs 79 4001

I had a February 1978 4001 (until it was stolen in ’89), and it had raised letters on the TRC. I’m pretty sure my buddy’s ’76 also had a raised logo. I would think that a previous owner may have swapped covers on yours. No, I bought mine brand new on Christmas Eve in 1978. But you know how guitar f...

78 vs 79 4001

Are there any differences between the 78 and 79 4001? I've searched, and I read on Ric's forum that in 79 the headstock logo became raised letters instead of the plexi covered logo like it is on my 78. I think the original pickups were defective. The bridge pickup had no body, and it was incredibly ...

Great vid! Your Ric sounds incredible. I'm waiting to find one of those--Macca freak that I am. (maybe the v63?).

I was impressed with the growl you got even with flats, sounds full too.

Re: Fretless--Wish They Made a Lefty

I almost bought a 4003s that was on Reverb. I was one click away, and then i thought about the Jazz Bass I own. Of the five basses I play, it's 4 on the go to list. I don't think I'll play fretless a lot. I've quit playing live, and I'll be using it for recordings. But I still want a fretted Jazz Ba...

Re: Ric 330, Vox AC30, and TS808

It depends on the pedal as to how transparent the pedals sound is. It absolutely colors the sound, but the TS808 does not take away the tonal character of my guitars. It drives the sound, but it doesn't create the sound. I'm not technical, so I'm not sure if I'm describing it right. I'm not just hea...

That's not a stupid idea at all. I hadn't thought of it. I think I'll look into it.

Fretless--Wish They Made a Lefty

Lately, I've been wanting a fretless bass. I'm a lefty, and the choices are something cheap, not my taste, or way too expensive for me. If I could afford Rickenbacker custom shop prices and had some inroad, i'd get a fretless Ric. I was curious and looked around on YouTube. i'm sure a lot of you hav...

Re: How long has it been

I've owned my 4001 since it was made in 1978 but have never known a lot about Rics, outside what I get from guitar mags. So I really enjoy reading the posts here. What is old news to a lot of you who've been here a while, it's fresh to me. I know that might get boring for you, but I appreciate any ...
