Ed:"The great thing about Rickenbacker's are: no matter what type of string (flat, round, tape) RICs still have a distinct & awesome sound that brings out the best in the player. As proven by Chris Squire, Geddy, Sir Paul, John Camp & Roger Glover among others. " Right on, sir ! I ...

John,
I can't agree more.
The combination of its maple/walnut(?)laminations and the "perspectives" of that fireglo finish is both modern and retro at the same time.

That sure looks scary ! Will the body fall apart some day? Since a well glued joint can be stronger than the wood, in what way can it affect the sound of a bass/guitar?i.e. What's the difference in the sounds of a glue-in necked 4001 and a neck-thru-body 4001? Anybody care to shed some light?

Sergio, Thank you very much for the tip. My 4003 was made in May 1998. So the fact that the bridge pickup is louder than the neck pickup should be normal for this one.(Thank God !) And my favorite knob setting is the bridge PU cranked while the neck PU backed off a bit to get some bite and increase ...

Sergio, I had already raised the neck pickup to its limit without cracking the pickguard since day one. Maybe this one is one of the "defeated goods" from RIC?(Damn! I bought it new.) What can the possible causes be to make a RIC hi-gain put out a low(fat but low) level? Is there any way t...

It's interesting that Jeff mentioned a Toaster neck PU and a Hi-gain bridge PU should make a good combination because I've been toying with the idea of changing the neck PU to a 7.4k Toaster.(20% for the "legendary" sound that I haven't experienced in person yet, 80% for the sake of "...

Brent, Removing the cover yields more playing positions and tonal possibilities, IMHO. You can play(pick or fingers) around or in the area above the bridge pickup. I use a pick most of the time and I like to mute strings that are not to be played with my palm near the bridge. My picking points are c...

Newbee says hello to all (plus a story)

Hi all, I'm a newbee. My name is Paul. I turned 37 yesterday. I'm from Taiwan(yes, I'm Chinese). Been lurking around for 8 months and already have learned a great deal from everybody's words. I want to thank Peter again for accepting me into this great source of knowledge and friendships. Merry 'Xma...
