Re: .0047 cap and push/pull pot 'substitute'?
I'd say a 1997 is 330K as well. A 1997 would have the 250k (~190k) volume and the 500k (~420k) tone pots in it. Interesting. How does that kind of setup compare with all 330K? Thumpier/fatter tone as the 80s and 90s 4003 were known for or? My 2000 is a nice middle ground. Since installing the cap a...

Re: 4003 Pickup History
The pole button top nails were changed out for the allen screw type used now and the control harness pot values were changed. Both would affect the tone.

Sorry Mark. Make sure you post the SN here and the FB RRF site. Also mark the Register entry for your V63 as stolen.

Re: GC Rickenbacker 4001S Special?
Gary, losing Ken was a great shock. I though he had it almost licked.
Jeff, I honestly think what you are seeing is due to off-center view and if a picture was taken straight over the center you'd see things were even.

Re: GC Rickenbacker 4001S Special?
Beautiful bass Gary! Welcome back, missed you. Expanding on what Josh was saying, I do not understand why there are not jigs to locate for mounting the treble surround, the tailpiece, and the pickguard. We so often see pics here of these mounted crooked. With a location jig, say the tailpiece, you w...

Re: MARF?? Anyone?? Anyone??
Who would come to DC/NoVA for a MARF and stay Fri/Sat nights in a hotel? If I can get enough people and "crowdfund" it, I'll host another one. SERF worked out just fine, but RRF traffic is way down since then, thus caution. btw, Thinking Aug 1-3. Make it later September and I'll be in DC ...

Re: Spacers/washers on truss rods - what does it do?
You mean if you run out of thread on the rods? I take you are talking about the modern rods, not the old style folded rods? If the former then you might want to take a look at the heel end of the rods to see if they are being pulled into the channels. This is a different issue than at the headstock...

Re: Bass Bobbins...ID ?
Jon, to me the three on the left look like typical 70s "higains", which were all wound to around 8.4k ohms of DC resistance. The top one looks as a neck bobbin, the other two look to be the bridge forms. These would have run from around mid '73 to the 90s when the current plastic bobbin fo...

From the reading I'd say it was a good winding. I'd look elsewhere for the problem.

Sepp, what you may fail to realize is we are but a small fraction of Rick bass purchasers. Not many of us buy new. We, being the geeky purveyors of Rick minutia, see and know all the details of the history of these basses. The usual buyer of a new Rick bass just goes into the store, plays the bass,...

Re: 4001 Bass Setup
Personally I think every bass I've played at our GC had action high enough you could drive a semi under the strings. I believe it is a combination of necks settling after shipping and also the prevalence of slapping.
