I would not recommend the plastic cleaner you linked above. There is nothing plastic about the finish of a Rickenbacker, it's a paint so you need cleaner wax for paint. I'll add to the discussion with the idea of paying huge prices for a guitar that was owned by someone famous. Will it make you a better player because someone famous owned it? Will it sound better?

Could be a number of reasons for differences in sound, strings being one. There may be changes in the level of magnetism in the pickup magnets too, some older types could lose strength with age. The pickups may have been wound differently. The capacitors in the tone circuit can also change with age ...
