Model of the Week Seven: The rare 4008

Post by bassduke49 »

This should be a lightly visited MOW with relatively few 4008 basses out there (compared with the more recent 4003S/8. But post 'em if you got 'em!

And have a great holiday!

We don't often see pictures of the 4008. Looking forward to seeing some in this thread.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

I thought I would find several previous posts with some 4008 pics, but it's slim pickin's out there.

I did find one, though, thanks to Jeff Scott:
4005s and a 4008

I think the eight-string in this pic is a model 4005/8. The 4008 was a short-lived 4001 with eight strings, quickly replaced by the 4003s/8. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Jared has one, maybe two 4008's. They are indeed quite rare. It seems to me there were some differences in the tailpiece and the string order from the way it was done on the later 4003S/8. I have a '98 S/8 it is a lot of fun to play but it does tend to wear out your finger tips in a hurry.

The was a a left-handed 4008 on ebay a few years back in Azureglo...Peter Levett and I both bid on it and lost....one of the most unique Rickenbackers I have ever seen. It had the earliest mirror-image neck I've seen on any lefty Rick...1982....custom all the way.

I am trying to contribute here. Emphasis on trying.

There should be at least one proper photo of the subject included in this thread, right?

Okay, here we go, courtesy of the RRF search engine:

Sorry, meant to post these earlier, but I got distracted. And I've been planning on taking a few more detail shots, like the special characteristics of the bridge, and also a soundclip.

The 4008 is interesting, kind of a cross between the 4001 & 4001S - no binding on the body, but it has Rick-O-Sound, and binding on the neck but with dot markers instead of shark inlays. And of course, as someone else mentioned, the octave courses are opposite from what the 4003S/8 have - on the 4008 the octave course is on top. I remember reading at one of the forums that the reason all the tuning machines are the same size is so that the user can decide which way they want the octave strings.

The 8-stringers have always confuzzled me. When was the 4008 produced, and when did the 4003s/8 take its place?

Finally finished reworking a track I recorded a while ago featuring the 4008:

tardis pedals

And I would like to thank Paul for including the 4008 in the "Model of the Week" series - I was afraid it might get skipped over!

What about the two potatohead models that Chris and John owned. I recall that Vincent now has Chris', right?

Awesome basses.....but that has to be the most downright ugly headstock I've ever seen on any instrument, bar none.
