I have a hunch- Ed Roman seems like the type of guy who if challenged would flat out say 'come and get me'. Given that he is in Vegas, he may be able to out-lawyer Ric because of some sort of 'Vegas style' lawyering, or perhaps Ed Roman has a bigger sales volume than Ric and he can afford to higher more lawyers than Ric. Not that I support what he does, but it seems that certain types of business's are able to get away with stuff more so than others.

You will see this on lots of early basses as they cut the slots longer back in those days, which is why the pickguard goes all the way to the horseshoe pickup surround.

One of the cinematographers working on that film fell off the Eiger and died.

Wasn't the headstock on those older models not tilted back as much? Probably the only way to get them in there once the fingerboard was glued on was to have that extra slot area to work with.

My 'March '73 4001's headstock has virtually no angle to it and does not have slots going past the end of the neck, so I am pretty certain that is not the reason. The rods can be bend a bit while pulling them out from the headstock cavity, just be sure to clamp the fingerboard down to the neck before doing to to ensure no undue stress on the fingerboard.

Roman also has a page where he says he can convert your 4003 into a 4004 Lemmy model for around $4,000.00.
I can only imagine how awful this would be - I have a friend who made the mistake of buying one of Ed's J. Frog "Mister Scary" George Lynch skeleton guitars, and while it actually looks OK, it does not play well and can't be set up properly. Rough fret edges, loose neck pocket, and generally poor build quality. When I Googled Ed Roman, I found a lot more customer complaints as opposed to praise...

He takes the phrase 'tooting your own horn' to a whole new level, and dosen't know how to keep his opinions out of business operations.

I've heard that he stays in business because his store is one of the few, if not the only place where he's located in Las Vegas to buy certian guitars. Even then I have no idea how he stays above water. He requires a non-refundable 100$ deposit to enter his store on the promise that you'll buy something from him.
