Hi Paul, great information, thanks for sharing it with us.bassduke49 wrote:Actually, Rickenbacker made fretless versions of several models, apparently to special order. As I mentioned in the book, "fretless" was a little known option and not just a separate model. In fact, only 4001FL and 4003FL were ever mentioned in catalogs or price sheets, but I accumulated photos of fretless (as far as I can tell they are factory built) 3001, 4000, 4001S, 4002, 4003S, and 4003S/5. Really the only differences are in the fingerboards (and the accompanying position markers).thx1955 wrote: To my knowledge, Rickenbacker never made a Fretless "S" model

Resetting the neck angle ... cont.
There was a comment earlier regarding how much may have to be sanded once the angle was reset
Here's the shape of things after the reset has been completed: As you can see the angle at the body is very shallow With this now complete, on to other things, to match my Ebony neck, Larry made an Ebony Nut for me The nut was slotted to fit the standard string gauge I use "40-60-80-100" and will be Clear finished
Next up ... Repainting (I Hope)

The ebony nut looks really great, Jim.
I noted that the angled ends of the truss rods look kind of wonky; perhaps Larry should have a look at that and re-profile them, if needed?

Ok now those pictures show the difference much better.
Now it all makes better sense, great work.
You've got to be dying to play this..... good luck on the continued progress.

Many thanks for the keen eyes, it was also identified by Larry and is being addressed.

The ends of the rods look like someone tried to square them off, not at all how they need to be to function properly.thx1955 wrote:Hi Guys, teeder wrote:+1jps wrote:The ebony nut looks really great, Jim.

IIRC, they should have a 15 deg angle to them.

Thanks Kevin, teeder wrote:IIRC, they should have a 15 deg angle to them.
I'll pass this along to Larry as well (he may already be aware) very much appreciate the input.

That's beautiful Jim, and I LOVE those ebony wings! I can't wait to see the finished product!
Re: And so it begins ....
It's been a little while since there was progress, this was to allow the reset neck to fully stabilise and to ensure there would be no movement in the reset neck angle.
With the neck finally reset and stable it's time to continue, the first of what will be several coats has been applied This base coat looks really lovely, and is almost a burgundy / blood red, finishing out in this as a solid colour wouldn't be too bad either
More to come ....

It might be closer to Burgundy, and there's nothing wrong with that!
