Misheard Lyrics

Post by elreydlp »

The subject of the "dirty lyrics" to "Louie, Louie" came up as a thread on "2 Car Garage". I have a book of misheard lyrics called, "S'cuse Me While I Kiss This Guy", and there's also a website:

http://www.kissthisguy.com/

I'll start with a couple from "back in the day". These are the lyrics we actually sang:

The Buckinghams's "Kind of a Drag": Kind of a drag,
When your baby's overdue.

Gerry & the Pacemaker's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying": It may be hard, but it's covered.
And you've been left,
For your Mother.

Any others?

My favorite misheard lyric is from "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds":

Somebody calls you
You answer quite slowly
The girl with colitis goes by.

"Prince Chow Mein" instead of "Prince Charming", by Adam and the Ants.

My wife always thought the line was, "Another one bites the doctor" instead of "the dust"...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

My favorite is from Bad Moon Rising
"Don't go 'round tonight
It's bound to take your life.
There's the bathroom on the right."

And another one we used to mangle was the Carpenters' Close To You
"...so they sprinkled walnuts in your hair
And golden startlight in your eyes of blue..."

I played at a restaurant/bar in Huntington Beach (Snappers) in the late 80's. There really was a bathroom on the right, behind the stage, so we changed the lyrics; unaware that that others had too. We knew the correct lyrics; we were just "personalizing" it for the venue. I didn't find out until I got the book.

My lovely wife assured me for years that the lyrics to the Stray Cat's "Runaway Boys" included the immortal line:

"Your underpants are teeny and you can't get a job"
"I don't want to sound incredulous but I can't believe it" Rex Mossop

Back in the 60's, my sister thought the Beach Boys' song was "Got on my nose" (God Only Knows).

I knew someone who thought Paul Young's song "Every Time You Go Away" had lyrics of "every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you."

And I had a friend who thought the Pogues' "Dirty Old Town" was "Dirty Old Sow"

Until about 1988, on Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale, I always thought the line "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray" was "when we called out for love and dreams, the way to broader trails."

Can't say I'm proud of that.

Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Yet another example where I know the real lyrics, but do this as an inside joke between the bass player & me.

There was the Paul Shanklin spoof of that song that actually used "Secret Asian Man", written during the buddhist temple fundraising scandal in the `96 election. Not trying to be political, just remembering that one...

My sister and I still laugh when we remember her husband singing Paul Simon's "Mama don't take my coat and throw it away"

Well, if a guy sings something that sounds like, "there's a baboon on the rye", he should be ready that people will try to interpret that line, and not necessarily in a way it was meant to be interpreted.
Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
