Hard-on-the-heels of the passing of Sam Leach comes news of the demise of fellow Liverpool entrepreneur ALLAN WILLIAMS at the age of 86 ...

Born into a middle-class family of North Wales ancestry, the LL spelling of his Christian name being very much a nod in the direction of the Celtic origins of his particular branch of the Williams family. Allan Williams is best remembered for his brief association with the embryonic Beatles from his base at the Jacaranda Coffee Bar on Slater Street, a former clock and watch repair shop, which opened for business in September, 1958. Being that it was as a result of his contacts with German club owner Bruno Koschmider that the Liverpool–Hamburg connection became established.

While still open for business, the Jacaranda has had a few facelifts over the past 60 years – the most recent being that of two years ago …
