Mister Blue Sky BBC Documentary

Post by hamilton_square »

First shown on BBC TV back in October 2012, the near hour-long documentary “Mr Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne and ELO” was filmed inside Lynne’s Bungalow Palace home / recording studio in Los Angeles. Recently repeated on the BBC, a MP4 screen capture recording of the broadcast can be viewed on Google Drive by clicking HERE.

While done at the time as predominately a promotional vehicle to publicise the simultaneous releases of “Long Wave” - a Jeff Lynne solo covers album - and “Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra” - a yet ‘nother compilation album of supposedly remastered greatest hits. The documentary highlights Jeff Lynne’s multi-instrument ability and well-known, often bordering on the obsessive, attention to detail – more a case of Mister Meticulous than Mister Blue Sky.

Notable documentary absentees were former Move and founding ELO bandmates Roy Wood and Bev Bevan. Jeff Lynne quickly glosses over differences he had with Roy Wood when ELO were first finding their feet. Wood was to acrimoniously leave to form Wizzard after the first ELO album. While drummer Bev Bevan, after some legal persuasion, was to reluctantly sell his part-ownership of the ELO name to Jeff Lynne in 1999.

While the duly assembled notaries have nothing but good and gushing things to say about Jeff Lynne, I got the impression listening to Paul McCartney that working with Lynne can sometimes be a bit of a demanding ordeal.

Re: The Jeff Lynne hairstyle
When watching the end credits, it made me smile to read the caption “Jeff’s Hair and Styling by Camelia Kath”. Which begs the question, at the age of 67 hasn’t he learnt by now how to comb his own hair.
For those at all interested; Camelia Kath is the wife of US actor Kiefer Sutherland and widow of Terry Kath, founding member of Chicago, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1978.
