What a huge loss. I was fortunate to see Big Star twice and Alex solo many times. Always couldn't wait for him come back. There's some Ric 12 string on September Gurls. RIP Alex.

Wow! This is sad news

Really sad to hear this. I remember buying a copy of the 1st Big Star LP in 1974.

Alex Chilton died today at age 59 in New Orleans.

Depending on your age and tastes, you may have heard him first in Big Star, the Box Tops (the letter), his solo work, covers of his songs (This Mortal Coil was the first I heard of him), or in the Replacements song. His work was stunning, interesting, and moving.

A sad day.

An absolute legend. A sad day indeed.
We've had 'Back of a car' in our set from the very beginning.

Man this is terrible...he was supposed to play at SXSW this Saturday. Unbelievable.

I bought the 45 of 'The Letter' when it came out in '67...I was 11 years old, and Alex was only 5 years older. That had to be one of the first ten pieces of vinyl I acquired. Great tune, and one of those songs that had added poignance because of the context of the war. Imagine bein' an 18 year old grunt guardin' the perimeter of some firebase in the middle of nowhere and hearing the words come out of your tiny transistor radio: "Lonely days are gone, I'm a'goin' home..."

Too soon, Alex, too soon...
