330/12 with black hardware

Post by oldgoatguitars »

I just purchased this gorgeous Ric 330/12. It has the black hardware on it. I haven't seen many with that feature. Is it rare? Also, I'm an acoustic player by choice, so I don't use many amps. I'm currently playing this piece through a Fender Blues Jr. It sounds fine (especially with a lot of reverb), but I'm wondering which amp some of you experts prefer with this guitar. Finally, I'm intrigued by the Ric acoustics...700 series. Being an acoustic player/dealer/builder for sometime now, I've had many come through my hands, but never once have I ran into one of these. Are they solid wood or laminates? This is my first post, and I hope I'm not asking too many questions on one thread. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Welcome, Mark...I have a black 360. Rare, well, don't break anything because RIC discontinued black replacement parts. I really don't know how many were made with black hardware but they likely aren't your most common.
Someone else can help you on the other questions

Welcome, Mark. Great first-up purchase! I'll leave the amps to the experts but I'm hankerin' for a Roland Jazz Chorus JC120.

Welcome, from one old goat to another!

Lots of amp choices. Much depends upon personal preference.

Rick did discontinue black hardware, but I think if they don't re-introduce at least the parts, there is always powder-coating available in most big cities.

Welcome to the Forum, Mark.... You asked about Ric acoustics--I've got a gorgeous 700 Comstock in Fireglo. Definitely no laminates here--it's got a spruce top and gorgeously flamed maple sides and back, and the deluxe checkered binding.... And it is the sweetest acoustic in the world to play and to hear! Wonderfully crisp clear souding treble notes, and a booming percussive bass end....and of course, that deliciously playable low Ric action.... I'm in love!

(I just got done playing it a few minutes ago, LOL!)

Welcome, Mark, the folks here are very nice. I play my Rickenbacker's through a 70's Music Man 100-RP with a factory 12" EVM. I also favor my Paul Reed Smith HG-70 combo with two twelves. On either amp, reverb is a must when I play my 12-string 360-12WB.

Amps... Hmmm... I'm sure the Fender Jr. sounds just fine, but for a classic Rickenbacker 12 string sound, I would suggest a Vox AC-30. They are costly (used as low as $1000, new as high as $1800 for the non hand built model). Vox does make decent solid state amps in the same ballpark as your Fender, and the new Chinese made Vox AC-30's seem to be $1000 flat.

Well, you folks will probably think I'm crazy, but I'm selling the 330/12. Truth is I'm an acoustic player and there's no getting around it. Thirty-one years of playing acoustic is hard to change. It really is a wonderful instrument, and I hope I can get it into the hands of someone who will play it and enjoy it. Thanks for all the advice, and I appreciate the warm welcome. Folks are truly nice on this forum. I'll hang around, though, because I'm going to keep trying to land one of the 700 series acoustics. So, if any of you ever hear of one for sale, please let me know.

Mark: As a player dealer builder, what is it about Rickenbacker acoustics that appeals to you most?

Well, right now, I'm just intrigued as much as anything. I've had about every make of acoustics imaginable come through, and though there have been those I couldn't afford, I've never seen one that I couldn't find; especially a new one. That's amazing to me. But, what I've seen in pictures, they look to have great finishes. I'm not even sure I'll like them, but I won't be satisfied until I play one (or more) for myself. From a building standpoint, I want to get the inspection mirrors out and see how Rickenbacker braces these. And, I just want to get a feel for the quality of materials they use. I suspect those materials are very good. Hopefully, I'll get that chance soon.
