Magnetic Fields Forever....

Post by jblakey »

I have a '75 4001 and a '90 4003. The pickups in the 4003 are much stronger (louder, sensitive etc) than those in the 4001. Is this entirely factory wiring design changes? Is it possible that pickups can deaden over the years? Asked another way, if I have a "4003 wiring setup" put into the 4001... and assuming pickup to string height, gauge etc is all equal... could/would there still be a difference?
I would like to be able to switch basses during a set without fiddling with or worrying about volume differences.

Joel, if you find yourself with some "downtime",
why don't you swap out the PUs in your 2 basses and find out? I'd have to say that they probably Are different. Time can affect magnetic strength, and it's possible the factory has at least sliightly changed specs on the PUs as well. Plus, the human factor; who ran the winding machines, etc.

is this a Cheech and Chong thing ?

" hey man ... take some oh dez thing man ,they chood bring you down to a level wher I am at ....whoa cool dude ....now I am sssooooo down ....theze es funky "

I however do not eat little red pills , so down time is out .

There could be several resons for this .

1) neckangle is different between the two
2) the fretboard sits higher off the body on one
3) you can't get the pickups the same distance from the strings
4) one pickup is hotter than the other
5) you are standing in a vortex of tone
6) you have consumed too much Christmas cheer at the office and your secretary stuffed her panty hose in your ear
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

Actually the 4003 pickups have more windings than 4001 pickups. That's why the 4003 sounds deeper and fuller while the 4001 sounds thin and trebly.
