Chris, you used to be able to do this, up until the new taxation rules came up in 1981. I had collections for this reason, and had to get rid of them and put the money into real estate and bonds.

Bill, that is a beautiful guitar!
I too would love to see a solution regarding the luthier shortage in the So. CA area.
Maybe a small 'custom shop' contracted from somewhere.
The shortage of medical staff is alarming here in California due to the rising cost of living.
I just completed an assignment at Stanford Hospital due to everyone moving away. I move to La Jolla next week for the same reason.
It's going to get worse.

Paul, how about a middle-of-Illinois story?
A new 4 bedroom house with full basement on the good side of Springfield goes for about $150k these days. Comes with yard, garage, and 15-minute commute to most anywhere your job would be.
Every place has its charms, though, and we don't have a lot of the amenities that California offers. If there's ever a second Ric factory, though, you could do a lot worse than the Land of Lincoln.

I was born in the Land of Lincoln, and lived there half my life.
When I moved to LA in '79, it had half the population it does now. I lived in Beverly Hills (flatlands), right where the Four Seasons Hotel was built in '83. There were no lines to go anywhere (including Disneyland) and no traffic jams. My first LAhouse--in South Pasadena--cost me $94K in '81. Sold recently for $350K. I've had 5 houses in LA area since, moving up into ridiculous money considering they were all about the same size except the very last one.
I accepted temptation and left CA twice. Once for Charlottesville, VA, in 1987. Beautiful, beautiful place with NOTHING HAPPENING to stimulate me creatively. Still, made a great living working out of my home (mail order) for only 5 hours a day. Came back to LA within a year and worked 16 hour days for another 10 years.
Second: Brasil. House on the beach and a huge, 5br 3 bath condo apartment (half of the 18th floor of my building) with amazing views of the Atlantic from every window. Cost: $220.00/month.
Came back to CA (SF this time) in a year. But I say: When the bug bites, you itch, and you never know until you've scratchedit.
Carey, have you ever lived anyplace else?
Ahhh, California! I must be brainwashed or something...

I lived in Ventura for about eight years, and Carey is right, it is beautiful. It is also expensive, though; our little stucco house on a tiny lot was $240k back in 1989, that was in a tract developed for "affordable" housing. Dean is correct, central Illinois might not be as picturesque as other places, but I'll take quality of life over scenery any time.
The expense of living in Calif. was only one of a number of drawbacks when I lived there. I lived in the Sierras for three years. Picturesque? Very, but maybe the land lended itself to some whack jobs. My first night there our next door neighbor shot his toilet with a 12 gauge. I kid you not.

"I'll take quality of life over scenery any day".
I have both, in spades, in California. But it's expensive.
The guys who laid the carpeting in my house make more per annum than my brother-in-law in Brasil, who owns a radiology clinic which runs 16 hours/day.
SF is expensive, but paychecks for professionals keep pace. Still, the cost of housing is silly.
I guess it all depends on what your priorities are. I found mine, but it took time. Others of us know what they are right from their time in the womb...

Gene, a plumber, Drano, anything would have sufficed but his actions probably had nothing to do with the toilet being screwed up. He was screwed up. To this day I never knew why he shot the toilet. A couple of weeks after that this same guy (who I only saw at a distance and never met) ran his car through the store front of a Western Auto in North Lake Tahoe....after this incident, no one saw him again.
Amazing how this thread weaved from Shilohs, to Calif. to toilets.
