John Curley (of The Afghan Whigs)

Post by loendmaestro »

Don't know if any of you out there were Afghan Whigs fans or not...(I am a HUGE fan!)
But their bass player has a new project called the Staggering Statistics & in their new video he is playing a Jetglo 4003. What's cool about this is that in the early days of the Afghan Whigs John played Ricks, but then was lured away by Stingrays (& at the very end, T-birds).
It's nice to see him pick up a Rick again.

This new project of his isn't bad (very indie/low-fi), but I HIGHLY recommend either "Gentlemen" or "Black Love" by the Afghan Whigs. Incredible, dark, soulful rock with a hazy r&b edge to it. Both records were recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis TN...so you KNOW that they're good!
One of my faves....

I recommend the Whigs' "Congregation" LP. 'Twas a big record when I was in college.

I saw them on that tour, too. AND Greg Dulli (sp?) was in the Backbeat Band with my friend Don Fleming.

Love that Backbeat Band soundtrack! Plus your friend Don produced my favorite Posies record "Frosting On The Beater".

Dulli is a mad genius too. The Twilight Singers are incredible...

Chris, you and I seem to have this thread to ourselves!

So what's it gonna be, where do I send my demos, son? I'd like a record deal, please. Development, songwriting, production, what you got to throw at me?

Hey, guys...

I'm not familiar with Afghan Whigs, but...

Like their bass player, my two main bass types are Ric 4003's and MM Stingrays. For a while, I was afraid I was alone in that... (thank god, there's someone else, too!)

I have a love/hate relationship with the Stingrays. It's currently hate. Who knows about next week, though. Stingrays are a strong flavor that I occasionally have the taste for. I ALWAYS love my Ric's, though.

It's fun to love two distinctly different basses like that. Makes for dramatic gear choices, for whatever that's worth....

I wanted a Stingray, but have opted for a G&L L-2000. Seems to me that the G&L's are much more versatile.

Sure Kenny, send your demos to me. All of the Island/Def Jam honchos in New York & L.A. REALLY REALLY care about what I have to say...

Mostly it's stuff like "Chris, why did the Killers record only sell 400 pieces in Birmingham last week? It sold 406 the week before. What's the problem?"
