Tom Petty's solid 360?

Post by RutleDirk »

I read somewhere that Tom Petty has a custom-made SOLID 360WB, or some such thing.

Anyone know about this? Pictures, stories, etc?

I asked about this on this site a year or two ago, and received some info about it. It should be in the archives, but if not, maybe whomever answered then will chime in now. There IS a picture of it in the Rickenbacker book, and it was made especially for Tom Petty by Rickenbacker in appreciation. It has a custom signed pickguard. Look in the book for starters. Let me see, what page...page 101.
"Here he is, come to pay homage to the Rickenbacker display!" (Said to me by owner Bruce at the "Great House of Guitars" in Rochester, NY)

Is it the 'Full Moon Fever' RIC?

I think it's a 360V64 with no sound hole and dot inlays.

I saw it last year at the RRHOF.

Karl, I thought the Full Moon Rick was a 60's vintage 365 O.S., but I might be wrong. I was thinking the solid body had a look of a 330, but it's been a year since I saw it...

(The one with the special 'guard is a 1997 I believe...)

Exactly. Twilley was a label mate of Tom's at Shelter Records. I knew Tom sang backup on some of the formers stuff and then when I saw TP with the bass I remembered that that was actually his first instrument and he may have played in on the track as well.

Ron Blair, of course, turns up with what looks like the same bass in a TP video in 1981.

I believe this is a photo of the solid body 360 that TP owned:

Image

It appears to be a "custom" model with 21 fret neck, R tailpiece, body/neck binding and dot fret markers. I had another picture, showing the solid top but my old hard drive crashed and I lost it.

It's the Full Moon Fever guitar.

Also seen (in a clearer version of the same photo) on the cover for the videocassette "A Bunch Of Videos And Some Other Stuff."

A solid 360 must be one heavy guitar! And not just in terms of grooviness!

Virtually all the copies of this video on ebay now are UK versions. I've been looking for one in the US.

Tom Petty's Rickenbacker Bass

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm
