Newbie needs help

Hi all,
I have been lurking for some time and have finally decided to join. The "Nick" postings/rantings really showed what the members were all about.
On to the help..
I am very new to guitars and have been taking lessons for about 6 months and I want to start playing an electric guitar. What model Rickenbacker would be best. I want a quality instrument that I can play for many years.
Any help is very appreciated,

Welcome to The Rickenbacker Forum Andy. The instrument you get will depend on many factors, not the least of which is your budget.

While I don't know What your playing style is or your preference in music, I will go out on the limb and recommend a Model 330. It is good looking, has nice comfortable body shape and is a versatile player. I also wouldn't hesitate getting a used Model 330. There are some good deals out there.

Let the recommendations begin!

The 330 was my first. Got it in March. And now I'm thinking about getting a 620.

360s are a little more money, and also a very good starter Ric. My first was a MG 330, my innocence is gone.

Got to be a 330. Arguably the coolest and most favoured workhorse Ric - and it's one of the cheapest too. No debate required

Jetglo vs Fireglo on the other hand....

FG is almost overdone, MG on the other hand, if you can find a nice blonde one, they are pretty money. JG is always a winner, also.

How can you overdo FG Steve?

I also prefer the 330. A classic, beautifully made gtr with a tone to die for...you can't go wrong with a fireglo 330 Andy.

I don't KNOW Anthony, maybe by owning SEVEN of them !! To each his/her own on the finishes and stylings, but if my 330-6 MG and 360-6 JG were FG instead, somehow, I wouldn't gush as much as I do over my 360-12VP FG !! I like MG and JG for the 6-ers, I would save FG for the 12-string, but that's just me

There is a double post from me above, but I didn't accidently post twice & the post numbers are the same.....how did that happen?

The funny thing is Steve, that I never really went for fireglo untill I discovered the wonderful, darker '90's FG. I became totaly hooked & now, although I have always stated mapleglo as my favourite Ric colour, I just don't look at anything but fireglo. I think it's some sort of internet virus, caught from Jim Glenn!!!

Fireglo has certainly presented me with a bit of a conflict. Wanting this beautiful finish but at the same time wanting something a little different. While I imprinted on this finish as an adolescent, when the time came to buy my first guitar, I settled on a Model 350 in Maplego. I agonized over this choice being reasonably certain that this would be my only Rickenbacker. Ha.

My second Rickenbacker was a Model 450/12 in Fireglo and I really enjoy this finish, most of the body covered in a large guard, though.

My third was a Model 4003 bass in silver. What can I say, there is strength in diversity.

My fourth was a Montezuma Brown Model 1993SPC and what a gorgeous finish.

My fifth was a Model 480 in burgundyglo and I absolutely love this one. Such a deep colour.

Andy, I hope you see what is happening here.

I think five is my limit. But I am thinking of fireglo.

I thought your 1993SPC was autumnglo Peter! I have never really liked MB, but your gtr looks superb....any chance of another pic to remind us?

Thanks for all the info. I guess the color will depend on what is available, but I think a 330/6 is in my future.
Used or New?
What would be a good beginners amp. I was thinking of a Fender G-Deck because it allows input and has other instruments built in. Would that help me in developing a "feel" for timing etc?

Andy,

I'm partial to 330's,too. Currently I own a 620-12 string and have a Maple-Glo 360-6 string on lay-away. May I ask if you are shall I say..less than tall? If you are somewhat height challenged, you may want to test drive a 620 as well. They're attractive deluxe solid-body models with binding and inlays.
620's have smaller bodies than the popular 330/360's and might be easier for some to hold and play. Being a solid body, the 620 has more sustain and treble, FWIW.
Understand that I've got nothing against 330's; they're Rickenbacker's most attractive guitar! I'm just trying to point out more options. If you choose a Rickenbacker, understand that they are impressively crafted instruments. Good luck, and keep us informed

I can honestly say I am not "less than tall" height wise! I cannot say the same thing width wise.
