What is the order to SET UP an instrument?

Post by markthemd »

First and this is assuming that the frets are level , crowned and the strings are NEW.... it goes like this ;

1- tune instrument to the pitch you will use MOST of the time .

2- adjust truss rod(s)

3- Check nut depth - press the strings down at the third fret and check the gap at the first fret ...you need .008 to .018 .The space/gap will be more at the low E string than the high E string .

4- set bridge height

5- intonate / strobe tune

6- set pickup height ,press all the strings down at the last fret .This will be as close to the pickups as they will EVER be .
Pickups that use magnets as polepieces need to be lowered while intonating and they also MUST be farther away from the strings than , pickups that have the magnet on the bottom of the coil(s) .

Start with the bridge pickup first and work towards the neck . The treble side will be closer to the strings than the bass side as there is LESS material for the magnet to sense.

BUZZING unplugged is NOT EVER an issue ... if it is for you , then when you gig unplugged ...let me know , I will pay to see you perform that way .
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!
