Question For Our Friend, Mark

Post by rob »

I was just curious on where do you do your shopping for luthier shop equiptment? Do you go through catalogs like Stewart-MacDonald? How about On-Line shopping?
I'm thinking about getting luthier tools in the future, and I was wondering where the best deals were. I do get the Stew-Mac booklet, but prices do add up quickly!!!

After I left Rickenbacker in 1976 ..I went to work with a German repairman in SanFrancisco Calif . - Klaus Heyne. He opened my eyes to many ideas and new ways to approach the same old things on guitars ...

As an example: truss rods and how they differ and how other companies used other methods with equal, better or poorer outcome .

It was a great two years that we worked together . In that time he showed me that the guitar industry is really quite small and that by comparision , almost anything else as a commodity , is used by a larger group . With that idea/concept , it helped me to look 'outside ' the guitar industry for tools ,equipment, and anything that I might need to perform my 'job'.

There are several 'luthier' supply houses.
To be honest ... I do very little business with Stew/Mac.

I will give you some info that was a long time in the finding for me .
PAINT.

I buy from two sources (generally) ;
RUDD Paint Co ... Seattle Washington
Wesco Autobody Supply - PPG automotive finishes.

These two companies supply me with all the types of clear that are used in the guitar industry currently.

Tools for set up ... Ace Hardware is good

Tool town is good

The 'Woodworkers Store /Rocklin is fair .

New York City is full of tool dealers . Far more than Seattle .

But "luthier suppliers ' .. I tend to shy from unless I must use them .
Some times they are reselling stuff they buy at Ace Hardware!!!!!!
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!
