I have a 1985 360WB Stereo six string.
Could someone give me some recommended pick-up heights. It has two Hi-Gain type pick-ups.
Would it be possible to advise top of pick-up to bottom of string heights on bass and treble side of both pick-ups for a balanced sound?

He's right , I have posted this info several times before .
All guitars and basses start with the bridge pickup . Press all the string down at the last fret . This shows you the lowest point they will ever be at ... unless you are like Jeff Beck and use the covers as frets !!!
If the polepieces are the magnets (Toasters ,Strats,Tele's ,P-Bass,Jazz Bass ,D'Armond,LP Cust ALNICO neck ,etc ) the height can not be as close as a pickup where the magnet is on the bottom of the coil/pickup (High gains ,P-90,Gibson style humbucking,Filtertron ,Hi-lo tron) .
The closer you get the magnets , the stronger the pull on the strings . TOO much pull gives you a set of tones that are unwanted along with the needed note . These overtones can be controled by backing off the pickups.
The magnets need to be at least 3/32"away from the treble/High E string . Then set the bass side to balance . It will be lower in height.This is due to the mass of the string , not the pitch.
Set the neck second and then if there is a middle pickup set that . You will find all the pickups are farther away on the bass side .
Toasters do have magnets that are polepieces , however (and I do not know the thickness of the top of the bobbin that they set in , but as they do not protrude I will assume that 1/16" is what material seperates these from the outside of the bobbin. Add the chrome cover to that and you have a thickness greater than a Strat pickup cover .
Because of this , you CAN locate these pickups close to the strings . A Fender pickup has polepieces sticking through the covers . Toaster magnets (of course) are inside the cover.
