Hello,
I'm new to Rickenbacker Guitars and this forum, I just purchased a new 650D Dakota guitar....should have it by the end of next week. What type of tone should I be expecting with this guitar? What types of music is it good for? Is it more Stratocaster-like or more Les Paul-like as far as the tone of the pickups? They say it has single coil tone without the hum almost like stacked P-90's, Is this true? How about some overall impressions on the 650D? Thanks for helping out the newbie on this forum!

I think you'll find you can get just about any humbucking sound you want out of it. As for single coils, I mean, it's going to sound a bit different, but some people swear they can get a "toaster" sound from theirs. I have yet to actually hear one, but your mileage may vary.
Compared to my Les Paul, I'd have to say the Dakota is a hell of a lot more comfortable to play. The edges are rounded, it's a lot lighter, and it's well-balanced -- mine sticks where I put it. Neck is Les Paul width, but not as thick, and the unfinished maple feels really nice.
This particular Les Paul has a little more output than this particular Dakota, but strings, string height, pickup height, and any number of other factors play in. In short, it's hard to say. If you do a search for "pickup height," there was a post a while back saying that these pickups are very sensitive to changes in height, and that you should play with them to find the "sweet spot."
