Yeah, "A Farewell to Kings" is the definitive Ric sound for me. Second place goes to Chris Squire on "The Yes Album", and third to all of Mike Rutherford's Ric playing.

Actually, the comment about the voice reminds me . . . when I was at the 30th Anniversary Tour concert in Atlanta, my Dad and I were walking from our car through the parking lot, and we passed a lot of people. One particular group had three guys doing air-instrumentation to all the songs from "Feedback". One of them was Neil, playing air drums, one was Alex playing air guitar, and one was Geddy playing air bass and singing. They were singing "The Seeker" when I walked past, and right when Geddy hits that little falsetto bit (I've been searching low and hi-IGH!), the guy stops, looks at "Alex" and yells, "I can't reach the note . . . quick! Alex! Kick me in the balls!"

I was laughing my head off.

That's funny!

Thing I remember most from the R30 tour whas when they did resist. They did a mirror image of Ged and Al and I said "Hey they're two Geddys now!" The guy next to me said "I didn't notice. All I could see was nose."

Yep Not just because I am a Rickenbacker fan but Geddy always had that great sound I first fell for on Farewell, And that was the Ric. To be honest I think he tries to make his Fender sound like the Ric very often anyway? Anyone agree? What's the point (right?) unless there is a Fender endorsement to consider?
Going back through a lot of music I have always liked I am finding it is the sound of the Rickenbacker that seems to hook me. The bass lines I used to take notice of, even before I knew anything about music, were done with a Rickenbacker every time. Deep Purple, Yes, Rush, Genesis and on & on & on.
Wish I could help more with the sounds but Am just now getting the sounds I am really happy with for Yes! and that has taken me way more time than it should have.

There's got to be an indorsement. They make a Geddy signature bass! He must get payed by Fender for them to use his name on that Jazz bass.

He does try to hard. He says his Rick doesn't have enough low end.. has he ever played a 4003 or 4004? His Rick probably didn't have the Cap bypassed. he should try a new one. I'm sure RIC would make a Geddy signature model if he switched back. So many people think him when they think Rickenbacker. Besides, nowadays his jazz sounds like mud in the low end department. On 'Different Stages' it was kick ***.. but now it sucks.

Well, he started using the Jazz exclusively from Counterparts onwards. I'm not sure when they started making the Geddy Lee Signature Jazz, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in 1993. Obviously, there's something about the jazz that he likes. And yes, his comment about it is that he can get it to sound almost like the Ric IN ADDITION to sounding like a jazz. He even admits that it's not the Ric, but the sound of it just kind of captured him again during the recording of "Counterparts". It sounded great there too. And on the "Different Stages" live album. And on the 30th Anniversary Tour.

But it's just not the Ric.

Oh also, another funny moment at the concert. Geddy got out the acoustic guitar to start that little acoustic set in the middle of the concert, and he was about to announce one of the songs when this giant white moth starts flying at his face. He waves it away, but it keeps coming back. Finally, after like 20 seconds, he shoos it away, and then he kind of makes a funny face and says, in near perfect Southern drawl, "Y'all got some big bugs down here!" The crowd went wild.

"He says his Rick doesnt have enough low end".

You gotta wonder if he has ever heard any of his live stuff.

Well, if he sat down with it, wouldn't the bass part of it be up at his neck?

It is awkward when sitting down, but then the guitar is just right. Cuts off the circulation in your leg after about an hour. The necks on mine are super narrow. Wicked tone, tons of bottom, sustain for weeks. Guitar neck is tricky due to being so narrow.

Whoever wrote that is wrong. I don't believe that for a second....It's the Jazz Bass with more neck pickup.

John, It's one of those things which could be debated to the ends of the earth.

I guess people have mixed opinions.

Unfortunately I've come across no interview whereby he claims what bass he utilised for YYZ.

I agree Henny. You won't find it any worse than the camps that try to dissect Beatles songs as who used what...

I'm pretty sure I have read where Geddy has said the Jazz was used on YYZ, I just can't remember which rag it was in...Sonically, my ears tell me the same thing, YMMV. (lol)

I'm not to fussed if it's either, fact is, it's a super bass sound... and if it's not a Ric then I vote to keep it Jazz, sounds great!
