.047 cap ID
Hi, I'm working on a project bass and I want to wire it like a rick 4001S, but I'm a little confused about the .047 cap. I purchased some from Radio shack and they are identical to the .047 caps that StewMac and Allparts sell (the small brown, round type.) However, after looking at the wiring on my 4003s8 I noticed that there is a huge difference, visually, in the way the huge rick (Sprague 715P .047+5% 600Dc) caps look and the tiny round, brown colored, .047 cap from RS and Stewmac. My question is...will both caps work the same? or, is there a big difference in the tone that I'll get from the small, round .047 cap as compared to the large, orange, cylinder rick/sprague .047 cap? Thanks, David
Capacitance is capacitance, no matter how you package it. However there might be two other factors which affect the sound. First, different package styles may have a wide range of tolerances meaning that the .047 mfd could be quite a different value in reality, but within spec for the part. Second, ceramic discs caps can be microphonic, i.e. they'll pickup body noise. But they're also stable and cheap, so they're always worth a try.
Mr. Hall...Thanks for your response. I'll try the minicap and if It's too noisy or just not right, then, I'll get some genuine rick style caps from Jim R.
ps. This is one of the reasons that I love Ricks...what other CEO of a major musical instrument manufacturer would take such a hands on approach? Heck, I don't even know the names of the Gibson's or Fender's CEO.
