The best model railroad layout I've ever seen occupied one bedroom of the apartment of a dope dealer I knew in eastern Pennsylvania. He had all the ingredients for railroading success: a steady income, plenty of time on his hands, and a job that permitted him to stay at home. The coolest thing about his tiny 'town' was the fact that all the businesses up and down his 'Main Street' were named for friends of his: Larry's Bar-n-Grill, Dave's Auto Body, etc...

He also had a dozen big salt-water aquaria full of tropical fish, all linked together with a single circulation system, which ringed his living room and went off down the hallway...A visit to his place was always fascinating.

And 'rewarding'....

I saw that McIntosh 240 at Ron's house not long ago. That thing is sweet, and the price was even sweeter.

Abbott, I tried inverting the top Advents after I read your post and the soundstage was much smaller that way and sounded a little muddy, but it may be something to do with my room though which is full of stuff. I had also read about that in some old literature and had never tried it. I put them back the way I had them: one of top of the other both upright and they sounds great.

I don't have experience with Needledoctor,but they seem to have a wide selection of the better brands. Please don't have a coronary though when you see some of the prices-they have inexpensive one's too.

I've always liked Thorens tables-Swiss made, been around forever, simple time proven design. As far as turntables in general, if you need full automatic functions, some models have them, some don't. Some come with cartridges, some don't, most come with dust covers , some don't. If you need it to play 78's good luck, although there are a few out there. In short,check the specs carefully.

I looked at the latest Audioadvisor and noticed their selection has really shrunk. I DO have experience with them though-product damaged during shipping. They promptly made good on it!

Bob, have you tried the Advents both in inverted position?---just kidding, they're pretty heavy as I recall. Seriously, stacked speakers have many benefits, but can have some drawbacks. Two tweeters playing the same frequency range and being separated by a small distance produce two identical (theoretically) wavefronts that can undergo destructive interference as they meet. For a given distance between them, there is a frequency range that will tend to "cancel out". Moving the tweeters further apart tends to lower this frequency and if far enough apart, this frequency is below the crossover point of the tweeter, becoming a non-issue. Alternately, having the tweeters close enough together solves the interference problem too. It's possible that flipping the top speaker put the tweeters at just the wrong distance. Center channel speakers are especially prone to this problem. This is also not an issue with the woofers as far as stacking. It really is a trial and error kind of thing (unless you want to spend big bucks on test equipment). Stacked Advents, stacked Quads, stacked Dahlquists were definitely the "in thing" at the time they were made- I'm sure for good reason-bet they sound really good, especially having 4-10" woofers-you can move some air with that.

Jerry, Several people recommended the Dual 1229 to me when I got my Mac set up. I followed their recommendation and am quite pleased.
