(Santa Fe, New Mexico-AP) -- A former bass player for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has died of a suspected drug overdose.
Howie Epstein was 47. He died Sunday in Santa Fe.
Sheriff's authorities say they were told Epstein had been using heroin.
He was driven to the hospital by his girlfriend, who described him as "under distress."
Friends say Epstein had been taking antibiotics for an illness, and had recently suffered from flu, stomach problems and an abscess on his leg.
Epstein had been a respected musician and producer for more than 20 years. He teamed up with Tom Petty in 1982.
A statement on Petty's Web site calls Epstein a "great talent and a kind and gentle soul."
