The Cure

Post by marc67 »

Just got a DVD of a recent Cure live show in Berlin - the bass player uses what seems to be a JG 4003 with a black pickguard and TRC. The binding looks as if it has finish over it. The sound is bright with lots of distortion and flange/chorus - very cool.

Simon Gallup is a bad boy. Very underrated in my opinion.

Simon is an incredible player! I remember seeing a video of them playing "One Hundred Years" on VH1 Classic a few years back, and Simon had that black-on-black 4003 with a cool, distorted tone. Maybe it was from the DVD, Marc?

One of my favorite basslines from him is the "Fascination Street" line, that just sounds so snarly. I have a remix of it around here somewhere where the bass intro goes longer, it's NICE.

I always like playing Cure songs - "Just Like Heaven" has a driving bass line as does "Love Song" and "Pictures of You."
Listen to that sustain!

On the DVD Trilogy Simon Gallup plays most of my favorite basses: 4003 JG; EB 2;T-Bird and a Jack Casady Epi. Love the bass line on "Sinking"from Head On The Door

John, I bet it's the same bass I saw and "One Hundred Years" is now a favorite of mine. I noticed Simon Gallup uses the neck pickup position on this song. Nice growl!

YEAH! That's one of those basslines I wish I had written. I made two of my bands cover that.

he's great. i think that's the same 4003 he's had for years... i believe he used it on 'Pornography', hence him using it in the 'live in Berlin' DVD for that album. the same with his black 'custom' non-gibson, EB-2 style bass with EMGs (Disintegration), and his Gibson Thunderbird (Blood Flowers).

Good eye Kevin..I think the black EB-2 style bass was made by the late Dick Knight. He was known to have designed some pretty cool basses/guitars.
