9012LIVE

Post by levykev »

picked up the new YES "9012LIVE" DVD yesterday and checked it out last night. really good, but there is some wacky, goofy as all hell backstage stuff... and VERY 1980's overall. Squire sounds fantastic, as ususal. i'm a fan of every era of the band, and have viewed the VHS version a million times, so it's finally nice to have the option of turning off the Charlex graphics portion of the concert, which really enhances the show.

my fave bit to look out for is during "It Can Happen"... the first pre-chorus bit, when Squire sings "there's a crazy world outside...etc."... you see him notice an extra plectrum tucked into the first fret area of his Rick! he then swipes it away and keeps cruising along. something that i've personally done many times. he got through a good portion of the tune without even noticing. he's still the best.

I didn't know he even played his Ric at that point. I thought it was just the Mouradian and a P-bass . . .

He played his Rick, Mourdian, Electra and I think he even played his red Tobias back then.

He never played a Precision, Robert.

He's played a Lakland P/J Glaub-Osborn in the early 2000s and his Westone Electra which has a P-pickup along with 4 other P'ups; but never an actual Fender Precision.

Really? Huh . . . I could've sworn I'd seen a picture of him with a white P-bass . . . maybe I just didn't notice anything else about the bass.

I remember the red Tobias now, because I saw videos from "Big Generator" where he was playing it. That's a nice bass . . .

Well, I did see a 70s pic, and read in liner notes or somewhere, he recorded Relayer's "To Be Over" with a Precision. The pic I saw was partial, but it looked to be a 70's logo maple neck Precision Bass. Not the Tele bass he was using in '69-70

It was a maple neck (and fingerboard) Fender Jazz bass with a natural finish body and white pickguard. It has black block markers on the neck. And it always sounds good live! (All his basses sound good live; especially the green Mouradian!).

His 1973 Jazz Bass is one of the best-sounding J's I've ever, ever heard.

The neck bowed however, Chris couldn't properly intonate it and it was given to a friend.

Sheesh, I'd have had it. Image

When did he give the Jazz away? Anyone know what year? He used that Jazz in '99-00 on the Ladder tour. Saw it with me own eyes! And that pic I saw of the 70s bass was definitely a P, black dot markers, not black blocks.

He sure did!

It must have been shortly after.

He bought his Lakland P-bass to replace his Jazz, from 2001.

So it must have been at the end of the ladder tour.
