My Second Ric (After 23 Years).

After 23 years, I've purchased my second Ric, a 330/12 MapleGlo and it's beautiful. I would have preferred the George Harrison reissue but it's out of my price range!

My first Ric, purchased new in 1979, is a 4001 in JetGlo although I've changed the white scratchplate and nameplate to black ones.

I'm learning all the 12 string stuff ie Beatles and the obligatory Mr Tambourine Man. Are there any songs that I should be listening to that have that instant Ric appeal that Mr Tambourine Man has?

Welcome & congrats Graham! I waited 20 years for my first, a year later got another, then last December, 12 years later, added another

Some 12 string stuff to check out:

- Back from Rio (Roger McGuinn) a whole CD full of nice *newer* type tunes

- Into The Great Wide Open, Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, The Last DJ... most anything from Tom Petty

If you like this style of music, theres plenty there to get you going

Oh! And I gotta plug a song from a very good local (Pittsburgh) band called The Clarks. Listen to *Born Too Late* from their *Let It Go* CD. This is one of my favorite 12 string play along songs. Any Burgh boys on here will most likely be familiar with The Clarks.

Scott Blazey and the boys are incredible. Fave's are "Stop", "Cigarette", "Penny on the Floor", "Caroline". This is raw Americana, no-holds barred, rock-n-roll. Wish it could all be this good.

Too bad "Back From Rio" never made it onto the album of the same name. I think it's the best song!

Right on Lawnjockie! I really like the Let It Go album alot. The Clarks are a damn good band, especially live!

John: My favorite is King of the Hill. RM and TP need to get together more. Those two just keep getting better with age! I guess the voice isnt the first thing to go...

Saw McCartney last week in Birmingham (UK). Nice to see the Hofner again but unfortunately, his 4001S didn't make an appearance and that was a disappointment!

Unfortunately I think that Macca has been convinced to strip away all but the most iconic material attachments as concerns his persona... this, in order to make his every appearance as memorable as possible to the masses (read: lowest common denominator)

Lamentably, that means playing the Hofner exclusively, since more people recognize that particular iconography.

This is what must pass for "image marketing" and "positioning" nowadays.

John-- McCartney certainly doesn't need to market himself for financial reasons. But I did read somewhere in the past several months that he continues to play the Hofner bass because that's the instrument most fans associate him with. To the extent that it matters to him at all, I believe he still plays the Hofner publicly because it is so much lighter in weight compared to the Ric. It's probably as much a comfort issue than it is for sake of appearance.

I always enjoyed post-1966 Beatles much more than the stuff that came before, so I guess I'm in the minority regarding my beatles bass associations;)

I agree with the post 66 remark to a degree. McCartney's use of a 4001 is what inspired me to buy one in the first place. Macca himself has stated that the 4001 was a far superior bass to the Hofner but, as mentioned, he is probably more associated with the Hofner. I have no problem with that, it is just a shame that the Ric didn't make an appearance.
