Dave...you need to make HS's for the guitar side of your 4080's so you can have two on one guitar.

Brian,,, I was thinking the same thing.....

The horseshoe collection was short lived, I no longer have 2 of the basses.

Welcome Keith and Michael. That must be some record, two new guys first posting in the same thread. You really can't do better than a new 4003 from one of the reputable on-line places for about a grand. There is a thing going on now due to the popularity of Rick basses and lack of supply, where the price of ****** used ones are selling for more than new. Unless you're a collector looking for something specific, the new 4003s contain all the engineering improvements to address the short comings of the older models. There have been signifigant improvements to the reliability of the necks in the mid 80's so you can't lose with anything after that. I still believe run of the mill late 70's 4001s should be around $700 but market forces are at play here.

Keith - Lots of opinions here, but the Horseshoe is not for everyone. The sound of the 60's HS equiped basses is unique, but many people find the ergonomics wrong. It gets in the way for most people and the magnets are ussually dead. It is also a very expensive undertaking to add it to a later bass. The reissue HS as found on the V63 and C64 is purely cosmetic, although the pickup does sound different on these models. Also, these two basses are very expensive and hard to get. The new 2006 4003s have a vintage tone selector that will get you what you need, plus they have reurned to some of the cosmetics of the 60's basses.

Michael - the 4003 is just right for your rock band.

I don't know, whatever happened to having a Ric bass, one, not seven; playing it for 30-40 years, breaking it in, from your bedroom to the greatest gigs you'll ever play, having the wood dry out and settle, acquiring *that* sweet spot through the tone you've worked, experimented with and crafted over time... ah well.

Even though I'm one of the youngest here, I'm old-school - I don't believe in having eight different basses for the heck of it. I can't really understand why people do, however. Just my take on things.

Welcome to the newcomers! I don't own either a 4003 or a horseshoe, so have nothing to contribute as far as advice goes. Someday I hope to have both, though.

Uhhh...Mark, Dave's got a "few" more...

Nothing wrong with having one of every color, model, options, etc. Dave's definitely a collector, but he does play 'em all.
Everyone's got their own thing to do. No offense intended, just that it was starting to sound like "pick on Dave week" after the LK thread & I thought I'd jump in his corner.

Welcome Keith and Michael!

I have no experience with the original '60's shoes, but I do love the sound and look of the new version.
Currently I'm gigging with two V63's, and have had no problem with the shoe being in the way. Am I on the sweet spot? Probably not, but they sound so good, I'm really not missing anything.

PS. Put me down in the "I wish I were Dave" catagory!

I'm new too. Just got my '06 4003 JG Tuesday. Just started playing again after a 15 year layoff.

Other than the vintage switch on my '06, what else is new?

You know it was funny.

I didn't think my two favorite luthiers were even in business anymore when I decided to come back. All the kids in the big chain stores looked at me like I was a silly old man when I asked where the Rickenbackers and G&L's were. I'm so glad to see both are alive and kicking.

You should've seen the S.E.G. on my face when I found this JG un spoken for at Wade's Guitar Center. I played it through a ****** little Crate combo and even with my rusty muscle memory and sloppy scales, the 4003 forgave me and gave me chills with its growl.

Now I've got to locate a L-2000 with a #6 Rosewood neck and I'll be complete.

Hey, Jeffrey, Cedarburg here. You just missed by a couple of weeks the Midwest Rickenbacker Confluence we held down at the Four Points Sheraton hotel (Airport). Welcome to the forum. You sound like a late returnee to the "sport" of Rick bass playing. Soon, you'll find yourself getting into collecting, just watch!
