Sonic Youth

Post by captsandwich »

I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I love these guys. I saw the video for Dirty Boots on youtube this weekend. Kim is playing a MG 4001 and Thurston appears to be playing a 400 series guitar.

Also, check out the video for 100%. No ricks, just a cool video featuring Jason Lee (from tv show My Name is Earl) skateboarding and a great song.

I love SY but didn't know they played Ricks.
I thought Moore was all about Jagstangs?
Nonetheless, amazing sound. Kim has a great style.

You should see the Lips. Great live show, very fun, very weird, very cool. And make sure you bounce a balloon at least once during the show.
Listen to that sustain!

I saw Sonic Youth during their 'Sister' tour. It was an odd 'all ages' show on a Friday night, scheduled after bar closing time (2:00 AM in Dallas). They hit the stage no earlier than 3:30 AM and played about an hour and a half. It was a great show featuring an extended improvised version of 'Expressway To Yr Skull'. No opener and no encores.

'Sister' is their best record, IMHO. It had a major impact on me, and what music could be, when it came out.

I saw the Flaming Lips about 6 years ago at First Avenue in Minneapolis. They played with Sebadoh and Robyn Hitchcock. I swear! Even weirder was that it was far from sold out. The Lips were giving out AM walkmens for the show because they were also broadcasting (pirating) it on a very low frequency so you could listen to the show through headphones and hear the show bleeding through. I remember they didn't have a drummer and used pre recorded drum tracks but backed it up with a video of somebody playing the drum parts.

I later ran into Robyn Hithcock at a record store.
