JH did say it is legal to make a replacement for your own Rick,
But in another thread he said that you couldn't make anything (even for your own personal use) that infringed RIC trademarks.

Guys, I'm afraid there's a misunderstanding here, perhaps a matter of full disclosure. John Biscuti was understood to want to exchange a standard bass nameplate for a C Series nameplate, which is not possible.
It should be obvious to anyone that C Series nameplates are only for C Series instruments. If you break or damage your C Series nameplate, you certainly can get another one on exchange. If it were otherwise, can you imagine how many V Series owners would be trying to pass their instruments off as a C Series?

Those who want a plexi TRC are out of luck, but if it's just a question of colour change, the original can be repainted. I really wanted a gold TRC for my 380L, but was told about ten days ago that the gold TRC's were no longer for sale. I'll just have to send the original to someone who's good with a spray gun. (That's not me, unfortunately.) Despair not, friends. All is not lost.
You can also use this as an excuse to buy guitars that feature the desired TRC. ("Honey, I have to buy that 660/12. I need that gold TRC for my 330/12 etc.")

When I called up, all I said was I wanted a "Plexi" one, I never said anything about C series nameplates. I thought perhaps there were holdovers from the V series, or maybe you just had some around from people sending them in to get alternates. I know a forumite here exchanged their run-of-the-mill rasied-letter TRC for a gold-lettered plexi one recently.
Not trying to stir anything up, just trying to get the facts straight.

Here is the actual quote I referred to:
"Actually, there is no provision for this in the counterfeiting statutes in most jurisdictions. If this was a replacement for use on a genuine brand product, this would be ok but to place it on non-genuine goods is not legally acceptable- prosecution civil in some areas, criminal in others."
Therefore, if the bass is genuine, then a facsimile replacement TRC is acceptable. You are not misrepresenting the product.
However, asking someone else to make one for you is not OK.
I'm just thinking along the lines that a plexi TRC would look nice. I like the depth of the clear plexi.
I'll butt out now.
