Seriously ugly!

Post by teb »

While browsing G-Base I found this little number with some (but obviously not enough) Ric influence. I don't know how I'll ever live without one, but I'll try...

It might even be uglier than that couch.

It looks like what happens to a wet sweater when it is hung out on a line to dry and the body and arms react to the weight of the water and become permanently elongated.

I know that from direct experience, albeit many years ago. LOL

Well, compared to Richman's works... that one looks almost nice.

Hey, Todd, ain't you seen the thread on this running in my section? It's called "Knock-Offs, Rip-Offs and Just Plain Ugly".

I nominate this nasty pieceofwork as an Absentee Member!

Yes, but when I looked through the threads and was going to add this one I didn't see it (I think my eyes were still smoking after finding this thing). At that point, I figured that it was ugly enough to deserve it's own thread. Rarely have I seen such a combination of an ugly shape, an expensive piece of ugly wood (I love figured maple, but for some reason, absolutely detest almost all quilted maple) and over-done, cheap-looking pearly stuff. Plus, in a minimalistic sort of way, they managed to achieve this incredible degree of ugly without even going into the arenas of strange carvings, inlays that would only be appropriate on a trucker's mud flaps or other tricks. What should have just been a guitar with an unfortunate shape became a true abomination, suitable for hanging on the wall of one's mobile home between a couple of big velvet paintings. I was disappointed though, that it doesn't have all gold hardware. A hundred years from now, somebody's going to find this thing and think that we were all tastless boobs. It makes some of those duded-up cowboy Telecasters look elegant.

Tell you what though....You buy one of these, have most of your teeth gold plated, make a strap out of a big gold chain, hang a string of dingle-berries along the bottom of the body and you'd be something to see. I don't know exactly what, but it would be something...

Chrome dog ear P90's look good.
A Bigsby looks good.
Maple looks good.
MOP inlays look good.
A pearloid PG looks good.
An F-hole looks good.
Chicken head knobs look good.
A bound fingerboard looks good.

And still this is one ugly pig of a guitar. Quite impressive, isn't it?

I mostly agree, Sven, but chicken heads usually belong on chickens and amps. I've seen one guitar ('60s 335 Gibbie Varitone) which had a chicken head knob that looked OK, and I think the big circular plate it was mounted on had a lot to do with that.

I've seen an electric Dobro with one (National?) that looked OK, too. But otherwise? Blecccchhhh!

Well, I like the look of some of those ****** 60's European guitars. They usually had a lot of switches too, so you could choose between very bad, totally **** or completely useless.
