And a question for Peter - why is every post now (sometime between 6:40pm and 8:05pm EDT) being spellchecked?

Why John, I hadn't noatissed any xtru speal chickkin goninn onn laidlee. It's werkin lak it alllweez hass fer mee Image

I almost dusted today, but spent too much time playing the (less dusty) Ricks instead. Anthopomorphism has firmly set in now Image In fact, the Ricks are hanging on the wall way too close to the computer now, and must have discovered that three more are coming via UPS this week (by peeking over my shoulder while on eBay).

So, now I am having to appease the older Ricks feeling increasingly left out by spending more time each day playing them all their fair share. Retirement gives me time to help prevent a mass revolution in the music room, otherwise the Ricks might all go on strike.... Image

Umm, come to think of it, maybe we HAVE all gone nuts now.. Image

John: Perhaps that is the time you make your spelling mistakes.

I'd love to have a large collection of basses. (especially Rics!) I have my '72 BG 4001 that Dale says is nearly ready to go, a natural refin '66 Precision, an old P bass copy that used to belong to Keith Ferguson, and my stage bass which is a '94 Yamaha TRB5. I pretty much just use the Yamaha at gigs because our band plays a lot of material that requires the low notes. I can't wait to get the BG back from Dale though! I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your encouragement to purchase that bass.

I do remember the good old days too. Back in 1986 I bought a mint condition '77 MG 4001 with original case for $300.

Peter, I went and checked my profile settings and check spelling was checked! Not how I had it, so I unchecked it. I still get the preview post screen, which is unchecked, and I tried checking it, saving, unchecking it, and again saving, but I am still getting the preview post screen. Nothing changed on this end except I went to supper!

Oh my, that is beautiful. And it is old. But it is a 6-string baritone, and that's odd.

So, is it REALLY worth that kind of money, due to it kinda not really being a bass and not really being a guitar either? And not a Rick either, most importantly for this thread Image

"But it is a 6-string baritone, and that's odd"

It's not a baritone, it's a 6-string bass. It has a short bass scale (30"), tuned like a bass with two higher strings, one octave below a guitar (EADGBE), exactly like a Fender Bass VI, and can sound like a "normal" 4-string bass.

A baritone, on the other hand, is somewhere in the middle: usually tuned A-A or B-B, and has a 28" scale. 2 inches shorter than a short scale bass, and 3"-4" longer than a guitar scale.

I paid 1600.00 for a nice all original Walnut 68 Gibson EB-3 in good shape a few months ago, those were going for 500 bucks 5 years ago. I also bought a nice jetglo 72 4001FL on ebay in 2000 (I think) for 1500.00. I bought a brand new fireglo V-63 for 900.00 on closeout about 5 years ago and a brand new mapleglo V-63 for a little less than that about 5 years ago also, both from GC. Like it or not prices are going up on all vintage basses and aren't coming down again so get 'em while you still can. Look what happened to Fender in 10-15 years, it is happening again with the others, especially Rickenbacker, so if you want that nice 72 4001 with full width MOP inlays, silk screened TRC, Grovers, toaster, screw top high gain, and checkered binding, you'd better buy them now while you can still get one for under 5000-10000.00 which they probably will be in a few years.

I guess RIC will have no choice but to announce the production of the 4001v68.

I was offered a 1972 Jetglow for $700 back in the 1990, and I thought that was highway robbery.
