North of Malibu
Saw North Of Malibu's CD page over on the CD Baby link.... I enjoyed listening to the sample tunes. You guys have preserved that classic sound !
Question -- are you guys playing Rics on this endeavor or is it all a Fender sound ??
(Sorry if I misdirected this thread here if it should be rightly listed under the Rickenbacker Artists category).
Thanks - Rich F.

Hey Rich....the tunes on cd baby now are a previous incarnation of the band prior to Rick our drummer, and Paul W signing on..the cd on there will be changed soon. In the meantime, check out www.myspace.com/northofmalibu the tune Crashing Waves features Paul on Ric 12 and me on Ric 6..it's the raw track but will give an idea...we added more compression to the final mix and kicked up the jangle factor...be out soon!

George - thanks for responding.
NOM's composition Crashing Waves is very good and I enjoyed it's jangly sound. My compliments on a tasteful guitar solo. I'm looking forward to hearing more Ric tunes from North of Malibu. Keep us posted as you guys keep recording.
Regards - Rich F.

Finally some surf music you don't have to say "turn up the reverb" to!
Wet enough that I think it got some salt water in my laptop.
It's a fun album with the previous crew, but I'm looking forward to the rest of the stuff with the new band.
Cheers!

George has done a fabulous job, along with Harry at Route 44 Studio, in post-production. I was thrilled with the raw studio mix (which is where the current MySpace MP3s came from), but of course all four band members had ideas for improvement, and we quite agreed on a couple of important points; among them to bring the bass drum and George's guitars forward in the mix.
We went into the studio on May 3. We did 2 takes each of 12 tracks and three takes of a thirteenth--all in about 3 1/2 hours, playing straight through. So, my own observation on the liner notes that "this CD was recorded live" is neither balderdash nor poppycock.
The post was done three weeks ago. When I got THAT mix, I was completely floored. It is simply nasty and luscious all at once!
Nothing from the final mix is online yet. I'll convert the CD to MP3s and then George will post them on the MySpace site.
The stuff on CD baby is old, old, and does not represent the band in its current (and forever) incarnation!

George & Paul
Thanks for your postings. Can you clarify how many more of the new NOM tunes are done with Rics ?? Keep us advised of your new CD availability as I would like to get one for my Rick Resource artists collection.
Regards - Rich F.

Only the one--"Crashing Waves"--is done with Ricks.
My own sound (when I'm playing surf style) is heavily dependent on a very traditional Fender Jag/ outboard Fender tube reverb/Dual Showman setup. It's a quite distinct sound, popularized by Carl Wilson in the early days of the Beach Boys. Although I've tried every single one of my Ricks with this rig, I have yet to duplicate the sound with a Rick.
I have several Rick 425s, two of which need complete restos, so (guess what?) one will receive Jag pickups and circuitry. Oh, sacrilege...but it hopefully will give me what I want--A Rick look with a Jag sound.
George's 330/6 has as great a lead sound as his Strat and Jazzmaster; his is a different sound that owes more to Dick Dale--brasher with more harmonic content.

Absolutely great stuff George, Paul and the rest of NOM! My favorite genre of music by far, played by a group of surf nuts that love it. It doesn't get any better.
I too am watching for availability of the CD. I have the cover's spot waiting, and an empty spot in the CD carrousel for the disc. Can't wait.
I am a FAN!
