Favorite Bass Sound? (Crazy on You, Takin' it...)
This thread seems pretty much spent, but I heard "Red Skies at Night" by The Fixx this morning on Sirius Radio and was reminded that I always liked the upfront "rotosound" tone to the bass on that one. I'm not sure if The Fixx actually had an official bass player though.

Stuart Morrow of the New Model Army.
Any of the songs on their Vengance EP (I think he left the band shortly after that). Of particular note are 'Spirit of the Falklands' and 'Christian Militia'.
Awesome basslines, cutting tone.
Also, Bruce Thomas from the attractions. So many good songs, but for an example of great tone I would suggest 'Chelsea'. The bass drives the song.

I like the "...Gently Weeps" sound too and the Jazz news also was a surprise. Think he also used the Jazz on "Glass Onion."
How about this one? I heard Joe Jackson's "Sunday Papers" recently and was reminded of that great bass line and sound. It's way up front in the mix.

That's Graham Maby on bass for Joe Jackson, isn't it? Great sound.
One more from that era is Dave Allen of Gang of Four. It's like a full out assault. Listen to 'Ether' or 'I found that Essence Rare' (or basically anything off Entertainment - everyone should own that album).

I just ordered a NOS (new old stock) Joe Jackson "Look Sharp!" debut CD. It is the one with "Sunday Papers." I got it via a reseller on Amazon.
I was surprised that so many New Wave era CD's are no longer available new. As MP3's continue to take over I guess it'll get tougher and tougher for old timers like me (born in 1962) to get new CD's.

Tiran Porter did an intervie with Bassplayer mag not to long after "Takin' It" came out. He said that the producer required him to use flatwounds with a pick in the studio, but that he preferred roundwounds. I thought he was also playing a Thunderbird bass around that time, and info on the "always reliable"
Wickipedia supports his use of Gibson basses.
Wickipedia supports his use of Gibson basses.I've been meaning to post this for a bit. I wrote Graham Maby an email via his website, and he was nice enough to reply with his equipment from "Look Sharp!". It was an Ibanez Silver Series J-bass bass copy, Rotosound "TruBass" black nylon-coated flatwounds, and a Fender Bassman 135 w/ its 4x12 cabinet. I didn't think he'd mind.
He also wrote that he'll be touring with Joe Jackson as a trio next year - also with Dave Houghton, the original drummer from "Look Sharp!"
I left out that fact that he also used a pick on a lot of the songs (kind of obvious), but he made sure to note that the bass line idea on "Sunday Papers" actually came from Joe, however he had carte blanche to be "as busy as I wanted."
Martin Gordon also clued me in on his 4001 setup on Spark's "Kimono My House" last summer. I appreciate it when those guys take the time to do that.

I'll be naming by albums.
Geddy Lee - ESL for the Rick and Different Stages for the Jazz.
Steve Harris - The Number Of The Beast and Piece Of Mind.
Eddie Jackson - Empire.
Paul McCartney - Sgt. Pepper and MMT.. what got me into bass.
Lately I've been getting into more "bassier" sounding bass. You know, with more bottom and less crunch.
Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath and Heaven And Hell.
Pino Palladino - Try! (John Mayer Trio).

Re: Favorite Bass Sound? (Crazy on You, Takin' it...)
I just found out that Graham Mabry is selling the Ibanez bass he used on Joe Jackson's "Look Sharp" on ebay.
He got a very unique sound of it for that recording.
I need to mull that over...

My absolute favorite bass tone ever is John Entwistle on "Tommy Can You Hear Me". No contest.
